Wink My Latest Pick Up - 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9L 360ci V8

Picked this up on Friday out past Gettysburg, PA. 134k miles on the odo. Some minor body scratches. Mechanically it seems great *knock on wood*. These things are fast for what they are. 245 hp, 345 lb. ft. of torque, AWD, high 14's/low 15's in the quarter (stock). Not bad for being 5000 lbs. Road Holding Index: .75 g. FUN as heck Jeep.

Here are some photos...

Friday (Cell photo):

Today (My Nikon D2x w/ 70-300 VR lens, no PP work):

I drove one of the 2002-2003 HO 4.7 AWD Grand Cherokees here and there. That thing scooted pretty good and surprised the hell out of some guy in a 1995ish Mustang GT lmao.

Those are pretty fun too. 255/313 on the power charts. But, 16.3 in the 1/4. Not quick enough

This is my buddies SRT-8 Grand Cherokee before he got the heads, cam, headers, high flow exhaust, chipped, etc:

Don't know where you got your times from but they are faster than the 5.9s. Not a 4.7, it's the HO 4.7.

I worked for Jeep for a while and have worked in the Jeep industry for the past 8+ years (still working there). The 4.7L is not faster than the 5.9L. The 5.7L Hemi - let's say 2005 model year for example, is even with mine. The 2005 model year (for example) Grand Cherokee (WK) with a 4.7L HO is 2 tenths of a second slower than the 5.9L & 5.7L.

Here are some numbers for you - 0-60 - 1/4 mile - source:

1996 Jeep Cherokee (4.0L H.O.) - 10.6 - 17.7 (None Identified)
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd (5.7 Hemi) - 7.0 - 15.2 (C&D Nov 04)
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (5.9L) - 6.8 - 15.2 (MT Jan 98)
1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis (5.2L) - 8.3 - 16.4 (MT Jun 95)
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited- (4.7L H.O.) 6.7 - 15.4 (Motor Trend)
2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 - 13.2 (R&T Nov '06)

Where are your numbers from?

This one is way off.....friend of mine (member here too) ran his '95 XJ Country (fully loaded, power everything, leather, etc) at Atco a few years ago and ran 16.2 bone stock.

Thanks man. Not sure yet. Intake just shipped. Exhaust on the way. I don't want to do too much to it.

Regarding the numbers, I'm not saying he didn't run a 16.2, but..

1995 Orvis 5.2L ZJ (Obviously slightly different from the XJ) per Motor Trend Jun/95:
0-60 - 8.30 sec.
60-0 Braking - 126.00 ft.
1/4 Mile - 16.40 sec.
Slalom - 54.90 mph
Skidpad - 0.75 g

I honestly never took any of my four 4.0L motor'd Jeeps to the track to race 'em, so I can't speak from experience on that.

I agree. I've had buddies take their 4.0L's to the track and they were in the 17's and 18's, but again as we all know there are random birds in the flock that have higher HP numbers from the factory.

Either case, once I get my CAI, exhaust and tuner on the 5.9L, I'll see what I run. I'm assuming 14.6-15.0-ish lol. Nice and slow.

My 4.0 xj w/no power options (sport model) weighed the same amt as the camaro....i could see 16.2 being feasible. Even more so if the rockers were rotted like the majority of older xj's out there..lol.

You need rear control arms or something to get that tire out of the fender? Or wait, these things are leaf sprung in the rear right? Going to regear or just let the 5.9 deal with it?

Had minor rubbing up front when turning sharply. Trimmed the bumper a little. Have minor rubbing on the control arms. Will either beat them flat and box 'em in or adjust the steering stops. Rear barely rubs at all, on flat plastic, I'll let the tire deal with it.

The 3.73's and 32's are great, especially with the 5.9L. In my 4.0L Jeep's I've run 33's with anything from 3.07 to 3.55 and it has still been fine for me. I'm not too worried

Good stuff. Coming from a 5 speed perspective here, not as forgiving as an auto IMO. Can't wait to see some wheelin pics.

Looks great man, I was wondering how long you were gonna hold out on a lift. What springs are they?
