Can I get a hand with pushrod measuring?

So I've been chasing this sewing machine noise in my engine, and according to hours of reading, the most likely cause is that the push rods aren't the proper length. So i ordered two length checkers, and i want to make sure I'm doing this properly.

Step 1: Turn engine over to pump up lifters. (< can i do this step with the starter?)

Step 2: Find TDC for cylinder #1, and remove rocker and push rod.

Step 3: Insert length checker into push rod cavity.

Step 4: Mount rocker.

Step 5: Tighten rocker retaining bolt hand tight (or until rocker starts to tighten on rocker arm? <this is just what i saw in the video)

Step 6: Tighten rocker retaining bolt one half turn. (< setting lash correct?)

Step 7: Tap rocker arm to find if there is any gap over valve spring
-If there is the pushrod is to short.
Loosen length checker until there is no gap

Does this seem about right?

you're using the comp cams 7702 checker that measures in .05"

It sounds about right, been a few years.

From what I recall.

I checked multiple cylinders trying to resolve an issue myself

I removed the rockers and pushrods.

installed checker and tightened the rocker arm back down and using the adjustable turned it until I had 0 lash (no up or down movement from the rocker on the valve and kept turning it back and forth until it was just on the cusp to verify double checking myself multiple times) counting how many turns. Each being .05". Then I took the base length, added .05" per turn and got maybe 7.3 or some**** then added .028" for preload...... memory is terrible and bought a set of 7.350.

So it sounds like you were there but I don't believe that extra 1/2 turn is setting lash but will not allow any flex to throw off the zero lash when you turn the rocker back

the preload is going to be dependent on who you talk to also. I wish I can remember what # I went with but it was right inbetween factory and what alot of guys were running with a higher lift cam

I know LSX land is full of easy steps and what not. But, in every other motor, you pick a close number for the PR length checker, say stock minus however much the heads were shaved. Take a sharpie and blacken the valve stem, then toss on rocker, turn motor over and look at the pattern on stem.

Should be close to this (PR too long though really)


Could be a tad closer to center but you gotta operate in the world of stocked PR lengths remember. Adjust the PR checker till you get a nice centered pattern on valve stem. Then pop out checker, measure with calipers and order em.

Disclaimer: no idea if this process works in magical lego set LSX land

When i was searching my issue i was going back and forth with TSP tying to solve it and they confirmed my method is what yhey used, see if i can find an email. Checking wipe pattern is also smart


Also never messed with adjustments besides my ls and some e46 m3's but that's a completely different story

Preload suggested to me when I was hunting my noise by TSP .050-.075". With my heads cam it was 10.5 turns. Giving me the 6.8" for the PR length + 5.25"(turns) yielding a 7.325 then I added the preload. Of .05 to get me what I wanted.

Just wanted to send you the method I used sent to me by TSP with some number to maybe understand it more

Where are you from? I've been chasing a pushrod issue and would like to measure one with help before I do it and order the wrong size.
