Anyone in the Military?
I've been in AFJROTC for the past four years and since i joined up with my unit I've been thinking about flying for the Air Force. Now that I'm about to head off to college I know that I will be involved with Senior AFROTC and will join the Air Force after I receive my college degree. My dilemma is deciding whether or not to fly. If i were to become a pilot I would settle for nothing less than a Fighter-bomber, no KC-10 pilot here. The only problem is that you are required to more than double your commitment in the Air Force if you do become a pilot. Bah just some thoughts I've had floating around for a while; any thoughts/comments?
btw I have perfect eyesight and I am very physically fit so that wouldn't be an issue.

having a goal of military service is admirable.
get yourself started on becoming a civilian pilot before you go in. that will be a useful first step in deciding how much you actually like flying a plane for extended periods of time.
if all else fails you can start working on them adn see if you can maybe sneak one of those little motors out the back door i am telling you man, we could make it work in the vert. it woudl be fast even with you driving

ur an *******...but i've been flying since i can remember...never wanted to pay the money to get my private license tho...both my parents are in Civil air patrol so i would jus go up with them then fly in the copilot seat while they slept
besides the issue isnt military service its wether or not to fly...i WILL be joining the Air Force as a Second Leiutenant after I graduate high school i jus dunno if i really wanna fly(seems like a question for that fastbird dude, he flies kc-10s right?)
and yes i like the idea of an F-22 engine in my vert

i am supposed to be in right now, i broke my shoulder...had an a/c separation and was discharged...my plan was to be a kc-10 pilot and become a career pilot to eventually retire then try becoming a pilot for a commercial airline at one of our local major airports...but i am unable to go back into the military because of my shoulder...and know my knee and hip problems...btw i had 4 years AFJROTC and was supposed to finsh my 4 years of college while i was a bomb specialist for the air force...always thought it would be awesome to know exactly how to blow stuff up...lol but after boot camp i came home to go dirtbike riding when i got hurt pretty bad...

I wish my school had something close to a ROTC But I myself am getting my private pilots lisence this summer, and I plan on trying to inlist again in a year. I tried the Marine Corp last march, but I paniced, and said I had asthma, and it turns out it was just allergies.
So my recruiter said I can try again in 2 years or move out of state.

j0n, how do you start as a 2nd Lieutenant after only doing AFJROTC? I thought you had to complete regular ROTC in conjunction with college curriculum?

Anyways, flying a fighter bomber like the B-2 would be cool as hell. Â*They are stationed at whiteman afb, MO. Â*I'd say go for flying, if you don't you will end up being incharge of people and have to deal with everything associated to having that possition. Â*

Man, why'd you have to dime me out like that. I was going to run with it for a little while.
FYI, to be a B2 pilot you have to be hand picked. It's a special duty assignment. You have to come out of another airframe.
Being a fighter pilot would be a neat deal, but not for a career. If you want to get an Airline job, you'd be much better served flying on an AMC type aircraft (KC-10, C-5, C-17, C-130) because you pile on a ton more hours than you would in a Fighter. Think 3-5K hours for a fighter career, more like 6-8K hours for a heavy career. If you insist on going the fighter track (nothing wrong with that), don't complain when you're using the piddle pack while flying formation off of a KC-10 on a pond hop, while the KC-10 crew is using their lav, fixing a cup of coffee, and stretching out for a while!!

lol yea i don't intend to fly commercially after i leave the air force...i just want to spend my commitment in and then once i get out i'll look into business of some sort...and i would actually prefer flyin something as badass as an f-22 over chillaxin in a big tanker

well, you know what kind of time committment needs to be invested, and it sounds like you've got your head screwed on straight. what do commercial pilots make, anyway? aren't they well compensated?
six years is a long time. you could change your mind in that amount of time, no problem. i wouldn't stick to one type of aircraft, either. i would think being trained in more than one type would be worth more, but i am thinking like a civilian.
i say go for it. at the end you'll look back and be glad you flew.

Im goin in the Airforce after the Spring semister. only for 4 years to get my life on track. then out to be a state cop if i can get in (i know its hard ) if not a regular cop will do. I just think i would enjoy lettin all of you off for speedin

would anyone in the military be able to get me a set of the MARPAT "digital" camo uniforms? I know the Marines use them, but do the other branches of the armed forces have access to them?

it's still worth it. you could say twenty years, and although i'd draw the line there, i'd still think it was worth it. you could retire from the military and go become a commercial jet pilot and do what you want to do, basically. no one says you have to cart people - you could do cargo flights. basically, at this point in your life, the sky is (literally) the limit.
i would think MARPAT would mean Marine Patented (patrol?), but i could be way off base. don't think that just because the jarheads came up with something (or had it given to them, more likely) that it belongs only to them. command will make use of a good tool throughout the armed forces as they see fit. if it's good for the marines, then it must be just as good for the SEALs and etc.
