Trans. from a TPI Iroc in a Carbeaurated Z28 - NJFBOA - Home of New Jersey's Camaros and Firebirds

Hey guys, as most of you know I've been trying to sell my '85 Z28 because the automatic trans needs to be rebuilt. 1st, 2nd, and Reverse work perfectly, but 3rd and 4th (Drive and Overdrive) are shot. I have to manually shift, once you get into Drive, its like trying to drive a manual trans in neutral. Anyway, chrisfromnj let me know that he has a rebuilt 700r4 out of an '86 Iroc with the paper work. However, that Iroc is a 305 TPI and my car is an '85 Z28 w/ a carbeaurated 355, the computer system has been deleted from my car. I was wondering if I bought the trans from him, would I need the computer or anything special like that? or would the trans just work good in my car? Thanks in advance for any tips. I'm still trying to sell my car, but if that trans will work without having to add anything extra, I mite give it a shot. -Jeff.

since its not electronic it should work fine, it should be the identical trans to what is already in your car

i ditched my fuel injection for a carb in my 88... got my nice rebuilt 700R4 in there... they claim u could see a drop of a few mpg highway due to sumthin with the converter not locking up IIRC, anyway yea mines been fine

The trans should work and shift fine. You won't have torque converter clutch lockup. Also, you should find out if the TPI trans works with a speedometer cable or a vehicle speed sensor

the trans is cable driven it came out of a 86 iroc z that i bought to drive and parted out too much rust i have a booklet of papers that came with the car in the booklet was a slip that the trans was rebuilt

IF you want to retain the lock up there are kits available through B&M and TCI as well as DIY articles available around the interweb. You can set it up like stock to use vacuum reference and the brake pedal into account or you can just put it on a switch as long as you are careful to turn it off at low speed.
