Damn 305's

I am having a prob with my motor, when i give it like 1/4 to 1/2 throttle it make a noise that sounds like it is coming from the intake almost like a ticking. if i give it a tiny bit of gas no noise and when i give it 3/4 + it makes no noise. It had done it before but i put in a bunch of lucas fuel treatment and put super in it. and it went away in like 20 min. i continued to put super in it but i went down to 89 for a couple of weeks no probs and it just randomly started again and it sounds like **** cuz it is kind of loud. I just don't know what it can b

I honestly couldnt tell ya ... I sold it before it could be fixed it looked like it just needed to be tightened, but IIRC all 305's eventually develop that problem.

if the car has high miles like 150 the timing chain might be rattelling around at off load speed --- but what could also be a worn out distrbutor advance weight mech they will rattel at off speed and also cause the timming to be off from the loosness causing it to ping as well and higher oct fuel will mask the problem and i think you said you went away from the high test gas ?? a lifter wont go away with gas and carb cleaner forget that jz

How'd you make out with this? I have a 305 as well and just trying to learn what problems are associated with the sounds other people describe.

It's been running great the last week or two, he hasn't done anything.

I think it's just cranky because it knows that it's days are numbered....

dahm, lol, i was hoping he found out what it was. ive been reading around and on TGO and some say it could be the loose rockers liek previously said here, so, tomorrow i may pop the valve covers off and see. I figure it wont hurt, plus i may actually check and set the timing, lol... anyone know what base timing should be? and is setting the timing on a 85 305 with the electronic quadrajet the same as setting the timing on a tpi motor?

I doubt anything is amiss with his valvetrain. The longblock only has approx. 12k miles on it, and the valve covers were off about 1500 miles ago, everything was good then.
