Z06 Cam Valve tap
has anyone here ever heard of putting a Z06 cam into a camaro ls1 to cause the valves to tap.. The tech who did this install for me says the angle on the lifts in the cam is drastically different which causes the valves to drop quicker and make the (sewing machine sound) that it does now. Just want to make sure not too much smoke gettin blown up my ass. he is supposed to be one of the top Ls1 guys in south jersey. Any ideas or opinions if you have them the sound is driving me nuts and makes me a little nervous.

from my experience... the change in sound, is not possible with a zo6 cam alone, they are pretty mild. its just how these engines sometimes sound.

did you change to ls6 springs? because i thought other then the springs its the same parts and shouldnt make any more noise than any other ls6

if its am aftermarket copy of a Z06 cam than what was said about ramps is correct - and not all motors sound the same a slight difference in the blocks casting will make a big difference in sound some have a hollow knock forever some have like you describe - you did not say how many miles you have driven it and how hard it has been driven so far ??? -- also if the type of oil you may have been using was not used and weight you could be hearing that as well --jz

The Z06 cam has a smaller base circle than the LS1 cam. The Z06 uses different size pushrods and beleive the height of the valves are different to compensate for the difference. Technically if swapping a Z06 cam into a LS1 or other LS based motor the Pushrods length needs to be checked to determine what size is needed. The stock length for a LS1 is 7.400 but some recomend getting a 7.425 length. I found all this info out because I wanted to swap a Z06 cam into my truck. Ive read on LS1tech or some other forum of people talking about valve train noise after the swap. I belive all they did is swap the cam. Ive also read that some people had no noise after the swap. If youve got the noise I would try looking into getting the longer lenght pushrods.

I've put 10-15 thousand miles on since swap. I did the Z06 swap cause it was cheap, easy safe horsepower (this is my daily driver) so I didnt want to get to crazy. I do remember now the tech saying something about the push rod length being different but not causing probs. I also did springs and rockers. I'm pushin 350 at the rear wheel so it wasant to bad for about 1200 parts and labor but what do I know. Suggested oil norm or synth?
