if you watch it was clean, he never left his feet until after contact, no penalty on that one.

Downie was airborne before he hit the other guy, clearly going for the head. I', surprised Downie didn't break his own neck when he hit the boards.
That goon shoulda gotten tossed from the league. There's no excuse at that level of play to do that. And its pre-season!

Idiots. They start fighting right on top of the guy and are stepping all over him.

I watched over and over, It seems like the guy who got hit was lower because of going around the net. and downie comes up and hits his shoulder right into the other guys head, his one foot left the ground but it looks like that was just skating. I would hate to get hit like that. I did once, but i wasnt going that fast, but I was totally blind.

Its actually the reason you skate with your head up.

skating with your head up only avoids clean hits, and not even always then. flying elbows like that aren't gonna stop mid flight because you are looking.
wanna see a great hit, kaspertious vs lindros. great hit, put lindros out cold and did it perfectly clean. the way it should be done. shoulder set, elbows done, square up the man.

Only one foot was off the ground, as I said before, It appears that he was in the middle of a stride, The 20 game suspension is BS, He should have gotten a 5, The guy clearly wasn't looking, and was lower because of his cross overs, They said he dumped the puck to, But where we play we have 3 seconds to finish are checks if the puck is no longer carried by the guy.

it's 20 to send a message because this guy has a history for pulling these things off and the NHL is looking out for the players more
Quote:
Downie, a 20-year-old right winger, has a history of suspensions at the junior level. Also working against Downie was the NHL's intended crackdown on blows to the head. A panel of general managers, coaches and players has recommended harsher penalties after a spike in concussions in recent seasons.

wayfast, go into your leg and throw a flying elbow at some guy who is away from the boards and then try to sell the ref and the league that it was with in 3 seconds. i bet you end up suspended too.
it isn't about time, it is about the way the hit was delivered. the distance from the boards that is in the boarding rule is exactly about what happened. he was hit, his head then struck the boards. head injuries are dangerous, and that is why the rules exist to protect people against them.
there is also not a league in the world that allows players to throw elbows, much less full speed flying elbows. so that is strike 2.
then add the fact that he left his feet to deliver the hit. leaving your feet does not mean that they are both clear of the ground really, just that neither of them are taking controlled strides when you deliver the blow. the idea of keeping the players solidly on their feet wehn delivering hits is similar to the boarding rule, to keep the hits on the body and away from the head and neck area. welcome to strike 3
the charging call is the most obvious one here. you get three strides in the nhl to deliver a hit(as far as i know the NCAA and junior use the same standard). downy had an easy 10 stride lead up to the hit, four he may have been able to get away with, 10 is far far too much and multiplies the force of the hit a ton. again, this rule is in place to prevent serious injury and BTW, that makes strike 4.
now, if out of all of these rules the best defense you can come up with is 3 seconds to finish a hit, it really shows that you know little of and care very little for the integrity and safety of the players and the game.

I see no problem with that hit, He was skating with his head down, I admit he got a little bit of shoulder to the face but that is no way an elbow. It just happened from the way the guy was skating.
Yeah it hurt, yeah it happens, he shouldn't get 20 games for it, end of story.
Look at my cage, that was from an elbow from my own team mate in a drill, ****** my jaw up for 2 weeks, even when the cage took most of the blow.
I still don't agree with you. But then again, If youtube wasnt so ****** and I can see his other foot I might just agree, But till i see that i say, it was legit. But then again i'm not a ref.

freeze the video 11 seconds in, elbow up and both feet well off the ground. the initial frames from the wider angle show how far he came for the hit.
