Is the 305 that much of a pos or do i have a problem?

Alright so I am on the local 1/4 street stretch where its fairly safe to open it up a little. I'm doing about 40mph and decide to hit it some more. I get up to about 80mph and the motor is around 5000rpm's. Now I know better than to take my car past 5500rpm's being its a stocker 305 but what I am wondering is, Should I be topping out that soon? I mean I know its not that fast but I figured it still had some get up and go for a v8... Is there anyway that starting from 40mph could some how affect the already ****** shifts of a stock 700r4 and I wasnt breaking into 3rd gear? I'm just worried that either A my engine is on its last leg or B my trannys going the same route.

PS: My tranny is a freshly rebuilt 700r4 with about 4000 miles on it.

No to which question?

Is there anyway this could have been caused by the TV cable being hung up?

No clue about RPM's but my car goes well onto 85, not sure if it goes faster or not, but basically it tops out my speedo pretty easily...

Ok well I ran my car down the stretch again after putting a spacer on my air cleaner base. I know for sure its not hitting my throttle linkage. This is what i've found : In drive the tranny shifts just fine into 3rd (quite agressivly actually) but while in overdrive it seems like it just wants to stop shifting at 2nd gear. I wound it up again and it was taking my rpm's past 5000 in second gear. I couldnt really tell if i was getting into 3rd or not driving normally but that seems lto be what its doing. Anyone have any advice on what it could be? I'm hoping its my shifter (I honestly have no clue what it is, dont know **** about trannies...). I figured I might as well add that earlier today I slipped my car into neutral by mistake and took it into the upper 5000's. I dont know if that helps but I hope I didnt **** my tranny up when that happened...

if you have a 700r4 it wont shift into overdrive if you have the pedal to the floor.

Yea, but his won't shift from second to third while it's in OD at WOT. Which isn't normal....

Exactly... But it does fine in Drive. By any chance could a shift kit solve this problem by redirecting fluids? I couldnt be my physical gears because it shifts fine into third in drive correct?

PS: please go easy on my lack of tranny knowledge...

I'm not exactly a transmission genius either, but I would think that installing a shift kit on a trans that is already not working right isn't the best idea.

Didn't you mention that this trans is rebuilt with only a few thousand miles on it? If so, take it back to the shop and have them drive it, see what they think.

Alright so I went to the store thinking maybe my tranny has more miles on it than I thought and that I should add/change the fluid. I go in there tell the guy whats wrong and he tells me to try a bottle of lucas transmission fix. Anyone ever heard of it?

No no no. I went to advanced auto to get tranny fluid and the guy was like of this stuff is good ****. But I called the guy who did my trans before I put it in and he said dont put it in. He told me to press the gas to the floor when the car is off to free up the throttle linkage and then drive it. I did that and walah! I think part of the problem might have been reving it too far when I over shifted into neutral yesterday :X stupid move I know...

So that cleared it up and it shifted from 2nd to 3rd at about 85-90mph 4500rpms. I did let the gas off a little to help it shift but it felt like it wanted to go anyway so I am hoping its good now. I'm wondering if its a possibility if when the tranny was rebuilt something was aftermarket that would require letting off the gas to shift. Whatever it was its fixed now just wondering.

You still shouldn't have to let off the throttle at all to shift from 2nd to 3rd.

to answer your original questions, no the 305 is not a complete piece, my stock LO3 ran 15.9's in showroom condition.
you are losing some time by ringing it all the way to 5500, shift it at 5000 at all will be well.
if the trans is fresh and this problem has only shown itself since you installed the air cleaner spacer i would say the spacer is the problem. if the problem occurs without the spacer sinc ethe trans was freshened then the governor may be set a little too light or have too heavy a spring on it. any reputable trans shop coudl fix that in a few minutes or you can get a whole kit and do the adjustments yourself for about $20.
you should also keep in mind that your car has 2.73 gears, 2nd gear carries a long way and to pretty good speeds with them.

My stck '86 LG4 305 can easilly do into the 90's I just don't trust my tires and suspension. (New tires coming soon)

Though I usually shift from second to third by pushing in the left pedal in and moving the little shifter up, right and up again. What is this "auto-matic" you speak of?

I'm going to adjust the TV cable tomorrow. Since I did my TB spacer I havent really ran the car WOT that far into the power(if you can call it that) band. I think that the WOT of the TV cable is off from the standard.

PS: Give me some info on that longblock I may be interested...
