brake question

my friends got a 96 blazer with 127k miles on it... today he lost his brakes completely... pedal to the floor, couldnt stop until the pole stopped him, anyway he called me and i stopped by and he was in a parking lot, after the cops left i popped the hood and opened up the brake fluid resevior and it was empty! i picked up some fluid, filled it up and pumped the brake and pedal came back... got him home.. couldnt find any leaks or anything... could the fluid just have run out after 15 years and 127k miles?? i suggested he gets it checked out regardless but im just curious

how often does he drive it? maybe it was a slow leak?

yea, definitely get it to a shop ASAP, preferably on the back of a tow truck so he doesn't kill anyone if it happens again.

driven daily... not exactly a car guy lol so i couldnt get much info as to the feeling of the pedal prior to today

Wow.....yeah dunno what to say. It had to go somewhere.
Ive seen the fluid blow past the pistion and fill the booster.
If you just added fluid, and everything was ok, then there is fluid still in the line somewhere. Im sure there is tons of air trapped in the lines. If anything, its gunna need a big bleed.

yea, there will be a lot of air in the lines now.. so the whole system needs to be opened, filled, and bleed out. maybe he has a small hole in a line or fitting someplace. probably in a line where rust ate it. it may have opened up, and after a few pumps on the brakes, it would have sprayed enough fluid out onto the roadway that the pressure in the system would be so low.. causing the the feeling of no pressure at the brake pedal. somehow the fluid got out of the system. find the leak. repair it. and add new fluid.. then bleed it out. and look for leaks.
