I just went out and bought Nitto 555R's for this season. So far, I have 30 passes on them and the rear is still running. Btw, my car has 180K on it. It's hit or miss with these 10 bolts. Since your a 6 speed, the major thing that will kill the rear is your launch. I don't do a straight drop on my launch. I slip the clutch(bad for the clutch/good for the rear). By doing that, I have gotten the car to go low 1.9x 60' the majority of the time. What kind of clutch are you running in the car?

555r's are drag radials but not the best. they're very good on the street but nowhere near as good as mickeys/hoosiers on the track. probably much better for your rear than other drag radials though.

That's one of the main reasons I went with the Nittos over Mickeys. I wanted a tire that will last for a while, but still hook better than a street tire.

To the OP: Not a lot of people run the BFG DR. Search on LS1tech and you might find a few threads. When I was shopping for DR's last month it was very hard to find anyone who sold the BFG's so you can't get that good of a price on them. I ended up picking up the nittos for $270 shipped to my door for the set.

i broke 2 ten bolts on street tires.

The stock 10 bolt is a weak axle. Some people get lucky and have them last for a long time, others break them very quickly without beating on them much.

Anytime you are heading to the track with a stock 10 bolt you are taking a chance, no matter what tire you have on it.

Since you have a manual I'd suggest going with the Nitto's. You are better off spinning a bit then hooking and taking out the rear or drive shaft.

The Nitto's are a bit softer then a standard street tire, but not as soft as the other drag radials, so you get a bit more traction at the track, much better on the road, specially if you get caught in rain! and they have decent tire life.

I'd also suggest getting a rear cover and drive shaft loop! Get a good cover, the one that has the provision to load the rear bearings, ie: a T/A or MAC cover are brands I know of. These help prevent the differential from distorting and will help a bit to keep the rear intact. You should also realize that the drive shaft is becoming the weak link, so you want a loop! Cheap insurance should it snap. CBR and I have broken a fair share of them! I snapped one using the Nittos and launching fairly easy - pulling 2.0 60'

Since you’re getting 4:10s. Another good reason to not get a tire that will hook hard, you don't have allot of material on that ring gear.

Not trying to scare you away. People have gone years on 4:10s and sticky tires. I have two friends running in the 11s with stock rears and 4:10 and Hoosie QTPs and MT RDs. So you never know, so do what you can to make them last and protect yourself.

I've heard both things... better to run street tires... and better to run a full slick to asorb some of the shock... who knows.

Find a tire that you can live with and is in your price range really. If this is your daily driver and you are going to put these on all the time, you should really look at just a great all season tire.
If your car is a weekend only drag car or racing for fun, then I would start to look at a set of DR's. All of them have thier pros and cons and everyone will praise one while denouncing teh other.
Nittos and BFG's tend to get the same feedback, both sticky tires but not as great as MT's, and MT's not as good as BFG/Nitto on the street.
Like has been said, its a gamble with the 10 bolts for most high powerd fbodies. You can buy the tires now, and start saving for a 12 bolt, 9 inch, or an S60 rear now.

In terms of stickiness, I would rank the BFGs much closer to the MTs than to the Nitto's, not the other way around.

Along with what was said above, get some tubular lower control arms on there, and try to avoid wheel hop on the launch.

+1 on that. ive done quite a few 5800rpm clutch dumps on hoosier QTP DOT slicks. the softer sidewall absorbs the shock as opposed to a drag radial having a stiff sidewall and delivering a shock. although DOT legal, i wouldnt recommend them for street use. theyre really more for the track.

you have alllll year long. just save up and buy yourself a set for the track and keep the street tires for the street.
