Ravelco Anti-Theft

Anyone ever heard of, know anything about, or know anyone who has Ravelco in their car? I've researched it a bit on the Internet. It's a device installed into your car that virtually disables your car from starting without a special plug. The company says in the 30 years or so they've been in business, no car with their product has ever been stolen. But, I've only heard of them just by finding them online. Just wondering if it really is as good as they make it sound.

its prolly like the thing my dad had in his early 90's ranger, IIRC all it is is a jumper, you take the "plug" out and it breaks the connection, you put it in it makes the connection. im sure its prolly more advanced then that now but it prolly works on the same principle

My friend has something like that on his WRX. Without that "plug" that car is a Japanese paperweight, it doesn't do anything. And apparently the only way around it is to disconnect all the wiring and the installer claimed it would take him about 4 hours to properly do that.

It does sound like it's pretty full-proof. I'm thinking it might be good a thing to have.

one antitheft product that did suprise me, was the brake lock thing, its sorta like a "club" for the brake pedal. That was a bitch to bypass. I had the opportunity to remove one with limited tools i brought(hacksaw, prybar, large hammer, pipe, etc) In the end, the only way was to actually cut the brake pedal itself, car was driveable still sicne the pedal was cut right above tha pad and you had to basically use the whole brake pedal shaft to step on to stop. Then youd just have to replace the brake lever from a junk ayrd or dealership. I got a gift set of Chivas Regal scotch whiskey for doing all that.

Those brake lock things were good for a while. But now they sell online a thing called "The Club Buster." It was made for locksmiths and repo men, but of course any theif can order one. It looks like a big wing nut. It hooks to either a steering wheel lock or break lock and you just twist a knob and it snaps the lock in half.

*edit

my brother said the easiest way to break the lock on the club is to freeze the lock with something thats liquid in the can but gas when its released such as computer duster, liquid nitrogen ( ) freon, etc... then once its frozen put a screwdriver in there and tap it with a hammer to shatter the lock...

Yeah, that's usually how a lot of them get taken off.

I have the Ravelco installed in my SS, and my brothers 05 GTO. The guy that did the install for us did an AWESOME job. The set up comes with 2 plugs, so dont worry if you misplace one It also comes with a warranty card with a serial number, so you can order more spares. Its a very well built unit, and I think it would be damn near impossible to get around. All of the wires are the same color, so you cant figure out which wire goes to where. Our installer had a laptop with him, and several CD's with wiring schematices of just about any car, so he knows where to tap into. All of your accessories will work with the plug out, but will not start. Unless they are towing it, they wont be driving awy with it. Oh, when my brother had his SECOND Subaru stolen in 3 years (first one a 315 AWD 02 WRX, second an 04 STi), the STi was equipped with LoJack. Save your money on that, its a joke. They found the car stripped in Newark on the side of a road a month later.

The feedback I've heard so far seems pretty positive on it. My dad's probably going to go for it for his '06 GTO....I think once he gets it and we see what it's like I'll probably get it for my car.

If you are interested in getting installed on your car as well, have your car and dad's done on the same day. The guy that did mine and my brothers car took 100 bucks off for doing both our cars in the same day. Might as well since he will be at your house already.

Thanks for the info, Nick. It sounds like that might be a good way to do it. My dad already got a quote for it, so maybe I'll ask him to e-mail the guy again and see what it would cost for both cars. Either way, my dad's pretty sure he's going to get it installed.
