MORE trans problems !

so my car is about 98% back together.

go to put the converter bolts in and the verter is pushing against the flexplate, therefor not allowing it to turn. droped the trans back down realized what was happening, fix it, and put it back up.

this is now the 2nd time in about 2 hours the trans was completly back in with everything else(tq arm, DS, ect) and now we go to do the verter bolts again. and the converter is a pain in the A.. to turn. we get the 1 bolt in, go to spin to the second and its near impossible. we went threw all the gears in the trans while the car was up on stands. the tires do not turn in park, but in R, N, D, ect.. they spin fine. when you spin the tires the DS turns fine, shaft spins fine every thing seems ok.

the flexplate spun just the way it should with the verter unbolted, but with it bolted it up(just 1 bolt trying to get to the next) it is near impossible! i cannot get this thing to spin like it should.

any idea?

Install them all loosely then make several passes. I am assuming you are turning the engine over by the crank pulley bolt?

you should hear/fell 2 to 3 clicks when installing the converter.

you should also not be able to put your finger behind bell & converter, that will tell you its seated all the way.
Normally you will have 3/16" to 1/4" gap between flywheel mounting surface & torque converter mounting surface when trans is bolted tight. then pull converter lightly foward til touching, then install all tc bolts in by hand, than tighten to spec.

also is easier to use a flywheel wrench to turn motor over or use pry bar by sitting edge in tooth of flyweel and pushing on it to turn over.

i believe it was fully seated in the trans. now the only thing holding it in is the Bellhousing bolts it self, but i headed home from my shop and called it a night. tommaro after work ill take it all the way out and check the seating.

and as for the turning of it, im using a prybar on the flexplate

You have to turn the motor

as above use a prybar & turn it from under or use a deepsocket & turn the crank bolt to spin the motor to get to the other bolts.
it wont spin "In Nutral" if thats what your thinking your bolting to to the flywheel. Az

this. it sounds like the TC is not fully engaged.

With your luck then you'd have clutch hydraulic issues.

if its not a major issue take out the sparkplugs it will turn easier.

as for the torqe converter when you put it on the shaft & spin clockwise there should be 3 seperate clicks or "drops-in" 3 times did you do that?

if you didnt & your trying to force it your f'n stuff up & youll blow your trans or crank bearings or both.

if your not sure drop the trans & do it again youtube/google "installing a torque converter" for your specific trans youll see exactly how to

lastly i know im long winded are you sure the motor runs?

was kinda in a rush to get it done, didnt even spin the verter just pushed it on and it felt like it went far enough. im in the process of dropping the trans, the only things thats holding it is in the bell housing bolt, everything else is outa the way(DS,crossmember,TQ arm, ect)

and yes, the motor runs like a champ. its a 70k miles LS1

pull trans back out. Converters never just go in with out having to spin them to engage.
Hopefully you haven't damaged the stator/pump.

pull converter take a look at hub then use flaslight to look into the pump, make sure you didn't break 2 knotches on the pump shaft.

just dropped the trans on my lunch break.

took the converter out. you can spin the smaller shaft by hand, the bigger shaft i cannot spin by hand. put converter in and it spins fine, but then it clicks in to a certain point were it no longer spins. i have 2 converters and i tried it with both, resulting with the same thing in both of em. so its not the verter.

so pretty much it turns fine, but then when it "clicks in" to a certain point it freezes up.

IDK if this would make any sense, but what have you changed?

Its a truck flexplate right?

Is the trans a Fbod one with a fbod 'verter?
