Come to Atco Friday the 3rd, and come see my friends "Cumstang"

Yes, come one, come all, come see the Cumstang, but please dont cum after seeing it lol. seriously though, I'm not sure if I told you guys about it, but my friend took a 1990 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel motor, and installed it into his 87 mustang notchback. I built the hood for him literally overnight back in October, and havent finished it yet. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it shou,d be alot of fun. we finegaled the Trans, so now it grabs ( detnet cable had to be adjusted, and fluid was low) and we recently welded the rear gears, so when he blows these gears, it'll give him a reason to get a spool for the car. It has no problem spinning those slicks in the back, and should make for a fun night. So whos going the 3rd?

Ah damnit, so I gotta wait another week. and Ron, yeah its that turd. Like I said the trans was having problems shifting, due to low fluid ( told him to put a new filter and he would of caught that) and the detent cable was not adjusted right after we transfered it over, and was a one wheel wonder. now we got the trans and both wheels spin now. When he ran his truck that that was in, it ran 15's. Lighter chassis, anda few other things we did, should see mid 15's - high 14's for my predictions. he's on a shade tree mechanics budget with that thing, so I cant put my name on too much of that, but lets just say certain things he looked over on that car that might of been catastrophic was caught by me I guess we'll shoot for sometime next week.

Yeah. Im not too keen on Dodge rear gears, but he said his mustang has 3:08, just like his Ram...I think he means 2:93's in his mustang, but yeah lower gearing helps, cause it only makes 230hp, but I forget the torque, all I know is it's enough to spin the tires even with those gears with the rear welded. SHould make for a fun time when we finally get down there, adn also I hope he understands, and allows me to take it down at least once haha.

The car looked silly. I walked by in the staging lanes and the engine looked as big as all outdoors. What did Ron say? "That's a lot of smoke. What the hell?"

Yeah I told him not to go out tuesday night, and yes thats the same car at street wars. He kept running a 16 sometihing @ 72 mph, each time!! we checked his gear ratio, because he said he was topping out too early, and he's got 2:73, so thats not the problem, since his last truck was 3:08 , but also his truck had 33 in. tires, an this only has 28in. Were kind of stuck in a rut right now, so im just doing basic maintenance on it, while he gets some parts for the motor, bigger injectors, and what not, I'm not too keen on diesel so. And it may be rediculous, but I guess it's rediculous enough that Hemmings Motor wants to do an article on it

He's got a 727. OD in it is 1.00. He still should be able to chug along alittle better down the track the that, but here's the kicker, I lookeds at his slips the other day, his 60ft. is 2.1xx sec. This is a diesel motor with full slicks on running that, so i think theres a serious need of a driver mod, or somethings not right on the car. As far as im concerned, im just in it for the kicks, adn it gives me somethign to do when I'm bored.

was the truck he pulled it from 4wd? well, even if it's not different trans = different ratios in each gear. also, did he do any kind of suspension work to carry 1200lbs of engine down the track?

Lol!!! ok, my friend....he like to jump the gun. he's the kind of guy where he just installed something, adn even before all the final checks are made, he has to hop in it and run it down teh street, adn if he feels satisfied, he's done right there.... The Mustang was originally a 4 cylinder Mustang. he bought it with a V8 in it, and he wantedt o upgrade the 5.0, but then he installed the motor...the front suspension is still 4 cylinder, adn the rear is all stock besides the rear, which came out of a Mustang GT. The truck was 2wd. Like said, im there for ****s n giggles, and gives me somethign to do. I originally had high hopes for t the way he was goign with it, but he lost steam and willing to put money in it, so basically everything done is a freebie, or hand me down.... It's a shame cause the car was looking to head in a the right direction, but big dreams and small pockets tore that up.

Yea, if that was a 4 banger stang i'm surprised the front coils aren't sitting fully compressed with a cummins under the hood.

they are.... It's funny cause he goes, "yeah when I put the motor in the 4 cylinder shocks and springs are still able to hold it"...oh I'm sure they are, since they are sitting fully compressed. So what do you guys think he should do, thrwom a couple sandbags in the trunk to help with the traction problem?

sure doesn't look like it, plenty of gap between the tire and fender in the pics.

Anywho....don't band-aid it with stock front suspension and weight in the trunk. Get some good stiff springs on the front of that car ASAP, then sort out the rest of the suspension.

hm, where could we find stiff springs. I am very drag illiterate. I know how to maintain a car, but to have it perform properly in a 1/4 mile is where I fall short.
