Lower the pull down with the hatch open, then unplug the little motor, but leave the release wires connected, and then its bypassed.

I don't understand... If you lower the pull down with the hatch open then unplug it, it won't be able to move up or down, so when you close the hatch it stays in one position.

Just a note your third brake light current runs thru the motor so w/it disconnected your middle brake light won't work.

When I got my car the housing for the pull down was cracked, everything worked but under a load the gears would slip. A lot of the GM cars around those years have interchangeable parts for the pull downs. I got parts to repair mine from an early 90's cadillac.

ah ok then the teeth on your slide tracks are bad/worn/broken. they can be welded solid or replaced from another unit, say one with a bad motor or plastic gear case

So the pull down is working correctly but the latch wont grab onto the striker?

Can you work the latch mechanism with a screw driver? If you can make the latch engage on a screw driver I would guess that there is an alignment issue with the striker and the latch.

A worn latch, striker or poor adjustment of the pull down assembly would cause it not to hold. A lot of the issues with the pull downs that i see (besides the switch) is from people slamming their trunk lid causing damage to the parts mentioned above.

edit: I may have misunderstood your previous post, please ignore my post if it doesn't help.

i had the same problem on my old t/a. so i took it apart, pulled the plastic slides out, set it to where it would be flush in the trunk and used a bunch of jbweld to hold the slides together. this way its just a normal trunk lock when its all said and done
