looking to install an electric cutout, but where...

first off... its NOT for an f-body. Its for the Monte SS. My gf wants one soon so now I gotta figure out how to set it up. Right now the exhaust is as follows...edelbrock TES headers to a single 3" cat. then splits to 2 seperate pipes(2.5") that run along the driveshaft and each goes to a seperate muffler then the tailpipes exit behind each rear tire.
I do NOT see the point of installing 2 seperate 2.5" cutouts, its not worth the cost, so dont bother suggesting it, lol. The flanges to the catalytic convertor is the only place where the 2 pipes merge into one so theres no other common pipe to weld a cut out into. I was thinking, could i get away with putting a single 2.5" cutout right after the cat in just one of the 2 pipes. That would give my GF the sound increas at the flip of a switch she wants and would MAYBE add a little power if any, mainly for the sound though.. what you guys think?

nah, she just wants it a little louder, the 350 is good enough for her now, shes already talking about heads, cam, supercharger... but i have some other engine plans in the works for the future, maybe next winter

seriously though u should replace the cat or go with the 2.5"

replace the cat with what? its 3" now and thats the most restrictive section of the exhaust, The cat MUST stay, nothing i can really do about that, her father is a cop soo... yea. All the rest of the exhaust is dual 2.5" so im thinkign just to get some noise from it, a 2.5" cutout on of of the pipe right near where they split will be fine, and cheaper than doing 2 cutouts.

Wouldnt it work at its best right before the cat?? or is it some kind of cat with a 2 inlet 1 outlet?? I would think right before the cat would yield the most power and be the loudest.
Just like most people with F-bodys do them a single cutout at the I pipe

I guess your only option is one cutout, but then that's almost pointless. It probably won't make that much of a difference. Probably just sound like an exhaust leak.

could you section out a piece of the 2.5" pipes somewhere further down stream. Say 6-8" on each pipe then put a 3" cutout immedialtely following the cat, then put the existing flange back in place??? I'm not familiar with A/G body exhaust stuff so this may not be feasible...see pic

Just though of one problem with this set up.....when she goes for inspection the and look with the mirrors to check the cats, they will see the cut out....so also make a short splice piece to pop in for inspection, tuck the wiring up in the car, pass inspection...then remove splice, reinstall cutout and you are golden....

This is a diagram of the exhaust system, my idea for the cutout location is in red. The shape of the cat flange is shown on the left, and to transition from a circle cutout to the flange would take a few inches and then a few more to get back to the pipes. The pipes only stay together about 2 inches befroe and after they enter the cat and they split out at angles from an oval shape. I cant move the intermediate ipes back further because they run right along the driveshaft, any further back and the section where the drivers side pipe crosses over would hit the driveshaft.

how much louder does she want it, if she just wants a little louder take the cat out gut the **** outta it and put it back, looks the same just a bit less restrictive and louder.

Just a heads up the standard cut-outs are 12" in length so factor that into where space would allow. Then allow 8" width for the actualy electric valve if your going with one.
