Need some tunning

Well its a bit late in the season =p but I am trying to figure out an issue with my motor. I floor it and she wants to bog and die, motor gets quiet and then when I let go of the gas she is back to life. Now if I drive around for say an hour then I feel like stomping on it there is a 1-2 second delay and then it flies.

I retarded the timing a little because after I got copper header gaskets put in the idle was weird and erratic. She sounded a lot better and the normal driving was a lot easier. Sadly that is all I had time to do and it was as the snow was falling.

My question is, Do any of you have experience with carb tuning and timing, I am new to this and could use a mentor. If not is there a shop any of you would recommend.

You could have a few things happening. I'll state some, but without some visuals and test to form a starting point, you may be pissing in the wind.

1) Your carb is not properly jetted. Most Qjets flow 750 or 800cfm, you state 700cfm. what is the carb number?

2) you distributor may not be curved properly to match your engine/ car and thus causing issues.

3) #2 is rather critical with your setup as you are boarderlining the limits of pump gas. I run a similar setup but w/ a slightly 'larger' cam w/o issues.

Do you have flow #'s on your heads? want to see how much they were ported? Wre they just cleaned up and gasket matched?

Changing head gaskets should not have any effects on idle characteristics. Something is odd there. Gather there are different thickness gaskets, but they only vary w/in a few thousandths which will affect CR but not considerably.

I can help you, but not over the net as I would need to see the car and do some test. It would be quicker and more time effective.

Hey Larry the numbers on the carb are 7043266 2907, I talked to Cliff and he said it is a great carb but needs some help to match the engine.

This is the second carb on the motor it was swapped out from the first one and the guy who built it for me is no longer around so I can't ask him but I am fairly sure it is a stock rebuild.

I don't know if the distributor was curved properly or not, and I don't want to give it a shot since I have never done that before.

The flow numbers are; Intake at .600 lift 261 CFM@28" and the exhaust at .600 lift is 192 cfm@28"

I don't know why it changed when they did the header gaskets but I have to believe they may have advanced the timing since before I brought it in it was 8 degrees advanced. I was thinking of moving to a Holley double pumper since cliff has an 8 month waiting list.

Before you go throwing money around. Let's work with what you have. the Holley wont do much for you except kill your fuel consumption. It can even cause more problems. If you want, bring the car down and we can go through it. The stock HEI and Qjets do a good job when set up properly. Regarding the distributor, I have them put on a machine and recurve them accordingly. The kits you by are junk. trust me. Once we have that solved, we can move to the carb. Sad to say, but its a step by step procedure for best results. I have the tools and parts for carb rebuilds. I can get parts w/in a few days if needed. It will def be quicker than 8 months.

since your lift is no where near 0.600", what are the flow #'s from 0.100" through 0.500"

I'll have to pass for now, thank you though. The car is packed up for the winter and don't want to drive it to far with all the salt on the roads, plus there is another storm coming Friday. Lets see when everything melts away (I need to replace the heater core).

If you dont want to drive the car, You can just bring the distributor and carb. Although, I typically reduce the number of unknowns by doing the distributor first. That is easier to dial - in than a carb. I then focus on the carb. It is a lot easier to fine tune with 1 unkown than 2.
