wiring in engine bay

ok heres a tricky one, i have an 87 5.7 dual fans. there is a wire in the engine bay that looks like a fusable link with orange wires with the disconnect option it is connected to the alternator to battery wire but it controls my fans too. what happened was the car overheated and burned that wire and i just re connected it. however now my fans go back on but my car batt dies over night. should i cut that wire and splice a 30 amp in it? lost on this one

pics help, I'm not really following you. but you should not replace fusible links with fuses.

They make fusible link style J "fuses", nice option if you hate soldering in new fusible links.

Otherwise, a pic would be nice, your alternator is connected to your battery via a fusible link...? Da faq.

heres a pic problem is no one seems to sell this link thats why i thought a 30 amp fuse in it place you see i already put half the wire on i was gunna cut the other end of the black plastic

Napa sells fusible link by me. You would have to do away with the connector I imagine.

Is that solid core wire? If so, that's a no-no on a car.

im trying to sell the car but i want to have it working right again but unfortunately no one has inquired about a car with 70k on it

from that one pic all i can guess is you need to inspect and repair the harness. where do you live? maybe someone with some know-how can help you out.

It seems you have other wiring issues going on... and a fuse will blow with the fans.


Here is a diagram of the proper wiring....





To replace a fusible link...

REPLACEMENT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal from the battery.
  2. Locate the cause of the problem and repair before replacing the link.
  3. Locate the burned out link.
  4. Strip away the melted insulation and cut the burned link ends from the wire.
  5. Strip the wire back 1 / 2 . (13mm) to allow soldering of the new link.
  6. Using a new fusible link 4 gauges smaller than the protected circuit and approximately 10 in. (254mm) long, solder it into the circuit.

Whenever splicing a new wire, always bond the splice with rosin core solder, then cover with electrical tape. Using acid core solder may cause corrosion.
  1. Tape and seal all splices with silicone to weatherproof repairs.
  2. After taping the wire, tape the electrical harness leaving an exposed 5 in. (127mm) loop of wire.
  3. Reconnect the battery.

First, figure out what size wiring the orange wire is, then order the appropriate link kit.
Crimp and solder it in.

AND, get rid of that solid core wire, its bad, plus way too small!

no other issues going on just hard time finding the right part autozone napa pepboys strauss nothing i hate my area they hire idiots who dont know anything i worked at each company before being laid off by hackensack auto wreckers just keep trying to find a parts car with the wire

you said with the wire connected , it drains the battery overnight. That means there are other issues. With the car off, the fan relay is not powered and therefore the orange fan wire hooked up correctly can in no way cause a drain.
