10 bolt question
whats the weakest component of the stock rears on the 4th gens? i would like to upgrade the axles and posi unit so it can hold more power for when i do my engine mods down the road.

imo dont waste your cash on a stock rear. save and get a bolt in from moser or ktre. i put the best of everthing in a stock rear and still blew it up. i personally have the moser 12 bolt and its great. ive got over 450 runs on it, usually my 60ft times are 1.36-1.40.

It's designed for a Chevy Vega. That's why it's weak. The whole thing is really undersized for the car. You will need a new rear when you mod your engine up.

1st thing to go: rear

ring and pinion gear size is one of the biggest issues, not much you could do there to the stock rear

How much power are you talking about?
The rear is basically junk, any real HP will kill them quickly! Some people are running slicks and they last, but they are really the exception!
The case is small and can't handle large/stronger gears/posi. The case is thin and flexes which destorts the clearances, The axle tubes flex where they mount to the punkin, the axles are small and twist, etc etc etc.
if you have bolt ons and street tires then an aluminum cover it a good upgrade. It helps prevent the case from flexing as well as holding the bearings in place. But once you start making over 325HP or hooking you're going to start breaking parts.
I've done all the upgrades, Welded the tubes, HD posi until, T/A cover, Bearing to replace crush sleeve, GM Motion gears. I'm at almost 500 HP and even on street tires I've burned up a cone style posi, split a racket type in half on the 2-3 shift and snapped an axle.
And once the rear is upgraded or you hook, you're going to twist the driveshaft until it breaks. (broke them too!)

The problem is the one gear is pulled away from the other and from that they kinda destroy themselves.
