evap canister line question

there are three hoses attached to the evap can and when i changed the can out for a new one and reattached the hoses i noticed the fresh air hose was hanging underneath the car and not attached to anything. Is that supposed to be connected to anything besides the canister or does it just do nothing? Cause im not getting any vacuum in the can to open the purge valve attached to the other line on the can coming from the fuel tank and the purge line from the motor to the can does have vacuum going through it so i know its not anything with the vac lines. both purge valve and canister are brand new. if i hold my finger for awhile over the other end of the fresh air inlet tube, then i feel vacuum in the evap can which in turn is suppose to happen to open the valve.

Nothing is connected to the one line. other two lines, one to tank, and one to the selonoid.

You won't notice vacuum, it's very low.

Why are yiou replacing them. Very rare they fail?

yeah i replaced the lines cause i was smelling some fuel vapor and it was setting off the evap code and i noticed some charcoal dust in the valve so i decided to replace everything. the thing is im not getting enough vacuum to operate the valve though but if i hold my finger over that one hose then the valve opens. i know the purge line from the motor has enough vacuum going through the hose cause it will open the valve up if i hook it up directly but just not when its hooked to either old can or the new one. do i need that fresh air line or can i cap it off?

Shouldn't be capped. There is a vavle up above the gas tank (real PITA to get to), might want to check that out.

The EVAC code can also be set if the air pump is failing. not sure on your car but on the V8s is the quad 3 or quad 4 drive error.

Also check your gas cap, after running the car, shout it off and open the gas cap, there should be vacuum pressent in the tank.

that one should stay open to air. the purge valve is energized by the pcm. it only operates when certain conditions are met including vacuum. i'd just drive the car and make sure the monitor either sets or you throw a code.
