Oil loss problem..intake leak? Fasterthanyou read this.....

My car has been burning a lot of oil since the rebuild last summer. I'm talking about a quart every 200 or so miles. I can really see it coming out the exhaust the last few days.

I talked to the engine builder and he says everything was replaced on it including the valve seals. I don't think it's a valve seal because he used teflon positive seals. We're thinking either there is something wrong with the PCV system or an internal intake manifold leak.

Prevo....here's where you're experiences with my car come in. I'm really thinking that it's an internal intake leak. That would most likely have caused our horrid idle problems that took forever to tweak out right? That would also explain why I couldn't find a vac leak with smoke or a propane torch. If I pull the plugs and only one or two are oil fouled then it rules out PCV and points only to valve seal or intake gasket right? Let me know if you've got time to look at the plugs with me one night soon....and you can pick up your hubs at the same time.

Wow....I imagine that's pretty costly. Good luck getting it fugured out - sounds like you are on the right track.

Well seeing as how the car only has about 1,000 miles on it since then it hasn't been too costly yet.

not yet. I really don't think that's my problem though. If my plug check doesn't point to anything I'll do it maybe.

Saturday or Sunday depending on the time I can come over and check the plugs with you. Let's hope it's just a bad PCV. Intake leaks mean that cylinder is getting more air than the others. It's more likely to be on the passengers side since the o2 sensor is on the drivers and the engine was running pretty strong in part throttle. I'm leaning towards the valve seals if you said they're positive teflon. Those seals are RACE ONLY seals. My friend Ethan had some Dart Iron Eagle heads with those seals and he was replacing them every 1000 miles no joke. He hated them for that reason and vowes to never use teflon seals and I agree. If it were the rings it'll show up in a compression test. It's unlikely but if there is an intake manifold leak on the passenger side then it would have gone unbeknown to the o2 sensor and run some (or just 1) cylinder lean enough to do piston damage. Again, highly unlikely seeing as how well the car idles now and part throttle the engine is smooth.

Viton is the way to go. Teflon should only be used for hard block engines where the head temps MIGHT get too hot for Viton.

He swears up and down that the valve seals will not be the problem...but you never know. He is standing behind the engine fully though.....called me yesterday to see if I pulled the plugs yet and said if it's something big that I can't or don't want to fix to let him know.

I pulled the pcv valve out quickly last night with it running at temp and there was suction but I didn't hear it opening and closing...just open when I pulled it, which is normal right? It was also clean as a whistle on the bottom...no oil. If it was bad it would pull oil from the valvetrain into the intake there right? What about the other side maybe where there's just the hose that goes from the valve cover into the throttle body...could I have a problem there? I guess I could check that by removing the SuperRam lid and looking for oil in the plenum?

Jon....I'll be around sunday afternoon if you can stop by.

Sounds like a plan. I think I'll be back from Belmar around 3:00 or so.
