Manifold Modifications/V-Bands

everyone said to do the merge first and then work the way up to the manifolds for the hotside. doin that i am nearing the manifolds. i opted to go with V-bands to connect the manifold to the hotside.

first does any one have a pic of the manifold cut and ready to have the V-band welded on ? only pics i can find are ones with the welds already done, im lookin to figure out were to cut it for best results.

also for welding ive read a lot of people heat up the cast manifold befor welding? is it really at that much of a risk of cracking ? i just planned on tacking them on there with the mig and then letting my pops do his thing and lay some coin with the tig.

welded inside and out i presume also?

Thy twas watching the hours pass by til my freedom...mothers day a.k.a. Fathers Prison Day...lol

There are several ways to go about this. One very innovative way I seen, if you access to machining equipment (bridgeport)
see here: http://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-ind...manifolds.html

As for cutting/welding them. YES!!! you need to preheat them to weld. You can just tack them on without heating, but when your old man lays down those dimes.. he should defintly heat them up. Just lop off the flanges, you can put a bit of angle on them if you want to position the vband but remember, more angle you put on the cut, will result in a oval opening. If your father is experienced welder, he will know which rod to use also.
I would use stainless vband & weld it with 309 rod.
heat mani up to 300* , weld it, than back in the oven for 20min @ 300*, than turn off oven and let cool down slowly.
Enjoy!!!

No, he cut down a manifold to create a V band flange. Was done on a CNC machine, good luck doing that on a bridgeport by hand.
