Easter is this weekend (big Holiday travel) and of course HERE COMES SUMMER!

Don't think for a minute that gas station owners are just randomly all marking up their prices together. Most service stations are lucky if they see more than a few cents of profit per gallon. This is just another example of the @#$% rolling down hill. Price of a barrel of crude is going up, oil companies are paying more for it, so they are charging more for the refined products. All too often I see / hear of people blaming everyone from station owners to the guys pumping the gas for high prices, which is flat out ridiculous.

We have to deal with the brunt of it because lets face it - many people may cut out some unnecessary driving, or try to drive more efficiently, or even spend a ton of money on a more fuel efficient car....but at the end of the day, there isn't going to be any sharply reduced demand for gasoline at the pump. That's why I always laugh at the people who spread around the "Don't buy gas on XX day this month - that will show the oil companies who the boss is" emails. Very few, if any, of those people will do anything to reduce their use of gas that day, so they are still going to have to spend the same amount on gas another day.

What kills me is the price difference between NY and NJ, I work in midtown by the tunnel so once a week I go home through NJ to fill up cause it's at least $0.50/gal cheaper than by me in Brooklyn. Thursday night after the auto show it was $3.85 on the TP and $4.43 by me ($4.33 + 0.10 for credit). Both my E55 and ML500 take premium and have 20+ gallon tanks so the monthly gas bill is starting to sting

That said I have to agree we need to just deal with the brunt of it and plan on making smarter choices for stuff we dont need. Certain people want us to panic and buy hybrids and take public transport everywhere, for them I am currently shopping for a newer AMG and I am not letting this get in the way of this summers race schedule. Though I may have to drive instead of trailer to Bowling Green, Norwalk, and Indy (more than double the fuel economy) I will still be out there.

My bigger fear is that $5 or 5.50 a gal gas isnt where its gonna stop and that could kill any hope of economic growth. Hopefully it will come back to something we can live with sooner rather than later.

Yeah AMG has a preview night party every year for select owners where they unveil new models and have people like Tommy Kendall and AMG engineers talk about whats new. Aside from the food and drinks my favorite part is there are alot fewer people and you can get into just about any car (couldnt get into the Veyron).

Yea, taxes will kill you. I was in upstate NY for my cousin's wedding last weekend, and I coasted from NY, through PA, and back into NJ on fumes so I could fill up on cheaper gas.

Yup, not that it will happen but thats one place I think government should help us out with gas prices. I'm all for permanent tax cuts but even just a temporary cut will help people struggling to make their monthly bills.

My original point was that just as the news stations were talking about the price going near $4.00 a gal., up comes these stations with a 25% increase to $5.00 a gal.
Back in the 70's with the first gas crisis, there were shortages at the pumps, stations closed early, limits were put on about how much gas you could buy etc.

Wall street and the stock market buyers are driving the price higher and higher. Do you here about any ships waiting to unload fuel in the Arthur Kill (Perth Amboy) or Bayonne? ANY problem buying fuel at any time you want?
Many people have taken recent jobs for a LOT less then they were making and travel eats into that. With the price of food going up and gas currently has NO ceiling, there is very little left to pay bills or whatever.
I have been out of work for almost 2 years now, and I can find work, but not one that pays a suitable wage. Just my .

It isn't the stations in fact a lot them make less when it goes this high.

It is greed plain and simple. A few people are getting rich on oil by putting the economy in a deeper depression. Fuel goes up consumer confidence and spending goes down.
Our entire economy is based on consumers spending money on crap.

I have to drive 120 miles a day to Island Beach State Park to do work on Gov. Christies shore house. It is the only work around so I'm stuck. But if prices stay this high I will work 3 double shifts and stay home the other 2 days. I am also not going to buy the new TV for my living room and the stand to go with it. I might even cancel putting in my driveway this year, and I sure as hell not going to buy the wife a new car to replace the pos Malibu she is driving now.

The president has nothing to do with the gas prices, it was the same **** with Bush(though it's funny how HE was blamed, hypocrisy at its finest), it has nothing to do with Obama. It is what it is, gas prices throughout the world have been high, it's just now REALLY hitting us.

While I agree the president, any president, is not totally responsible for what goes on with gas prices I feel the current administration has not done anything to help the average American (and in my opinion many things that hurt). That said the federal gas tax is 18.4 cents a gallon while all but six states charge more, in some cases much more. NY is has the 2nd highest gas tax (California is #1 in gas and diesel lol) NJ is the third lowest gas tax. I think the states have just as much responsibility as the federal government to reduce their spending levels and cut tax rates.

Now what I find interesting is that even though NY charges 47.2cpg taxes on gas they collect nothing from me (and many other NY residents I know that live or travel near the border) because NJ only charges 14.5cpg on gas making it worth the detour after work to save a few bucks. If NY would cut its tax by 32.7cpg to match NJ, bringing the price difference down to around 10-15 cpg, they would actually increase gas tax revenue to NY state. I just find it funny that our elected officials cant figure out why raising taxes brings in less money lol

Sure they would make more money from you.....but what about all the people that either don't bother to cross into NJ, or don't live anywhere near NJ - they are stuck paying the higher rate, and NY is making plenty of money from them.

NY would likely break even, with 68.42% of NY's population living in NY City and the surroudning NY counties I'd bet more of them cross into NJ than you would think. Just look at the liscence plates on the tp between exit 10 and 16. But to me that doesnt mean NY shouldnt try to better the lives of its residents by reducing their expenses and giving them a better shot at the American dream of life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness

I guess its just two ways to look at it, I see lowering taxes as a good thing while others think raising taxes is the way to go Either way I hope the price of gas doesnt stop any of you guys from getting out and enjoying your rides, see you on the road

LOL. I think it's insane how different brands can vary wildly on prices. The Exxon in my town is 4.30 for super, while the Getty station one block away is $4.10 for super. Absolutely crazy IMO. I remember when I got my license 20 years ago that gas was only a bit over $1 a gallon for super.
