quick 305?

Ok so i dont want to spend the money buying a 350 tpi and then having it rebuilt then buying the parts for it, so i was thinking maybe i can get my 305 rebuilt, then throw on runners, intake manifold, injectors, a computer chip, and eventually a stealth ram plenum

go for a 350 now, dont spend big money on a 305, its the same price basic price to rebuild as a 305. plus everything from your 305 will bolt on to it. Only changes youll need to make are the following: ESC module, knock sensor, chip, and injectors. Everything else is the same for a 305/350 tpi. You can even reuse you roller lifter setup(as long as you get a roller 350 block). I'm sure almost everyone else will agree with me, get the 350.

You'll never make the 305 as fast as you want it to be. Go with the 350 and save yourself the time and money.

364 c.i. seems to work well also, may cost a hair more, though.

I've got a decently quick 305, but for the $$, I coulda had a much better 350. That's why I picked one up today.

FWIW, my TPI 305 dyno'd at 223 hp and 277 ft/lbs at the rear wheels on a lean factory tune. But, this is with World Products 58cc heads, a Crane roller cam, roller rockers, and SLP runners. Big money invested in a small motor. However, the heads and intake will get reused on my 350 to save some $$.

MrJuice's 88 iroc w/ a 305 is a decent 11 second car..... is that fast enough?

Stock heads
Stock intake
Stock cam
Stock tuning
Stock aussie 9 bolt rear
Stock tranny

Did I mention the word stock yet?

Upgraded fuel system, intake, exhaust, ignition, clutch and blower

well 88 iroc tpi with 305 come stock wit 195hp, ive got ram air setup, shorty headers, throttle body airfoil, high flow cat, and flowmaster, im thinking of getting intake manifold + runner setup from edelbrock, 52mm throttlebody, and then a plenum from holley. think that will get me at least mid 13's ? thats all i want for the everyday driving honda killer.

The Edelbrock runners and base might be a good investment, but don't spend the coin on a 52mm TB. If your car is an auto, even with those mods you might see mid-14s. Powershifting a stick 305 TPI car might get you low 14s-high 13s with the mods you mentioned. A friend of mine has a basically stock '92 Z and has gone 14.6's, but he's got a stick and he's a gooooooood driver.

A friend of mines 85 went 13.80's with a TPI 305 on street tires with a 700 trans. His car had world products heads, a cam ,headers, cat back and 4.10s. It had a stock TB,plenum, runners and the stock chip in the computer. It ran good for what it was but for the money he spent it could have been alot quicker.

Is that the stock blower? Anyhow, the only way a 305 can be made remotely fast is to dump a ton of money into it. If the same amount is put into a 350/377/383/400 etc it will produce twice the HP as the 305.

i'm here.............

a 305 responds just as well, if not better to many common mods for 350's(some 305's came with much weaker cams and the SLP TPI runners were actually deveoped on a 305). it is no difficult task to make a 305 extremely competitive with a similarly modded 350, they are both small blocks and 45cubes doesn't mean an automatic billion hp upgrade. so if you have a solid 305 roller motor in the car, work with it and worry about rebuilding **** for huge power numbers later.

secondly, and prolly the most important thing for this thread, it costs the same to rebuild a 350 as it does to rebuild a 305. so any machine work or anything you woudl worry about spending money on, it is the same thing or at least with in a few bucks.

if the 305 is still running strong and you want to "build" a motor i woudl suggest you start collecting parts now. anything that is a simple bolt on liek runners or air intakes and stuff, throw on the 305. find yourself a good 350 roller block and have it machined/bottom end together the way you want it. then you jsut swap the stuff off of the 305 and onto the 350.
that will leave you with less down time for the car and a better piece since you won't have to rush to get it done.

"porting" the stock upper box to match SLP runners is easy.
lay the gasket on the plenum, run the bolts part way in to hold it the way it will be lined up when installed, hold the gaskets flat against the plenum and trace the openings with a marker. then jsut go back with a dremel tool/die grinder and make the openings in the plenum the same size as the ones in teh gaskets.
you can also do the same to the runners to makesure there are no casting flaws obstructing air flow.
right behind the throttle body, inside the plenum, you will find a casting ridge that also shoudl be ground down.

it only takes a few hours and the money you save not paying someone can go towards other mods

i am the worst person ever with tools, if i try porting that, i will be the only person to kill themselves with a dremel and gaskets.

you would have to try to really mess up porting the upper. basically as long as you don't go past the outer edges of teh gasket you are only helping. lol

if you want, i am gonna be doing a plenum 'DIY' using another members car as an example some time soon. once you see it if you aren't comfortable i can take care of it for you.

If you really want, I still have all the tools and will gasket match the SLP runners to your plenum. Ive done 3 plenums and 2 runners. I dont know if I have pictures of my prior work, but let me know and Ill see what I can do for you.
