that doesnt mean he should get a 4 inch cowl hood for it. like I said, he should find a hood thats not the norm on eBay, or on Harwoods site. make his own, or find someone that can help him make it.

i believe he settled on a 2.5 and not everyone want something crazy, original, and expensive when the normal alternative will do the job

So thats it, you spend all this money on a car, and your gonna go the easy way out when you buy one of the most looked at part of the car? and thats just it, theres no original hoods for 3rd gens, they've all been around for 20+ years. plus, if he's gonna change the front and rear bumpers, why not take that extra step and make the car really unique, dont fall just short of different and original.

because to most people functional matters just a little bit more

But you could make it more functional when building custom. and thats like saying a cold air intake works without putting shrouds around the filter, and without wrapping the pipe ( the pip gets heat sinked, and the filter just sucks in hot air) with a cowl hood, you also need the plate to keep it from breathing in under hood heat, and to allow a smoother flow under the hood. when you see Hemi's, stage 2 olds and pontiacs and such, they have a gasket that seperates the filter from the engine bay heat, and gets more direct cold air. So unless he buys/builds that as well for his car, its not really functioning properly

sooo failing to make one point you change the topic to cold air intakes?

not many people CAN build their own hood, just because you know fiberglass does not mean its a good recommendation to tell every 17 year old kid whose air cleaner wont fit to build a hood... he isnt looking to be all original, hes looking to make his **** work, and buying a hood will be cheaper than buying supplies and teaching yourself how to use them

first off I didnt change any topic, i answered this. your saying people sometimes wants function over form, but what im saying is people buy cowl hoods, but arent functioning fully the way they were ment to perform. without something seperating the filter from the engine heat, its not functioning 100% it is ment to, thus creating a custom part or even hood to maximize the elimination of absorbing engine heat will better the performance of the hood. so end of discussion.

and FYI actually unless hes using Carbon fiber, its not that expensive compared to buyind a 300-400 dollar hood. and its not that hard to learn, thus why I said if he cant do certain things, have a friend who knows how to to help.

if he has never done it, and dosent have any friends that have, and dosent have a source for the supplies or the tools to do it, yes it is more expensive.

and i would call it VERY functional in his case since with the stock hood he COULDNT PUT AN AIR CLEANER ON THE CAR

Cold air is not the function in question. He needs to fit a high rise intake manifold under a hood that does not look hideous. That's the primary need. Not how to maximize power. If he wants that he can add it later with a 'turkey pan' or something like that.

And sure, he can try to make his own hood but the chance of success is pretty low (not a direct dig at you WF, plenty of people can't do this). Most people can't even attach a fiberglass scoop to a fiberglass hood and end up using pop rivets.

In this case spending the $200-300 bucks is a good idea, since building his own looks like it would be a whole bucket full of fail.

Ah turkey, pan thats the name I was trying to think of. and at the bucket of fail comment.

...im just saying for his car, it would be nice to have something other then the usual for clearance. if he wants, then go get a 2.5 cowl instead of a 4 inch cowl

No arguement there. The shame of it is that there really isn't that much offered for a 3rd gen bird like that.

There are no other options, Im not going to waste my time building a hood, to be different when the car is just your average firebird... I would love to have a formula hood on the car, with 90+ bumpers and a formula spoiler, but like Mike stated....

I CANT FIT THE PROPER AIR FILTER UNDERNEATH MY HOOD.

and thats with out the nitrous.

how much clearence are you looking for?
if possible, track down and get a FUNCTIONAL puwerbuldge cowl induction hood and run like a 2" high air cleaner with a dropbase, or a base modified to clear fuel lines/linkage. The cowl induction into the top of the air cleaner would give additional air flow lost by the reduced filter height

2.5''...the 4'' doesn't look right and your car is too slow to warrant the "I have a ton of power" look.

If you need the height that that hood provides then I don't think you have too many choices. If it could be shorter and still provide the clearance I'd suggest that.

Im quite fond of mine actually. It follows the fender line and fits the car pretty well. Much better than all those ram airII hoods out there.

I vote to put a hood like the one on my 1992 (in my avatar). Not too sure the inspection guys will like it but what do they know. It only creates a "small" blind-spot of about 3 car lengths....
