The Phillies won the World Series in 2008 with not that big of a payroll if I remember correctly.

Well there are a number of Yankee fans in this thread and no one agrees with you. So you are wrong again, as usual. At least I'm not making things up.

Correct, that was a great team.

You could say that the late 90's Yankees were a much better team then the current squad, and they weren't filled this mega-buck guys.

Lee is a good pitcher, and he would have helped the Yanks line up. I dont think that bringing him in for 7 years was a great idea, and throwing millions of dollars away.
Lee dominated the Yankees, but he was torn apart by SF, a team with poor bats.
SF also dominated Doc. Now, considering that SF has retained all the big names, and are looking to bring in some bats, its very possible that they could see Philly again in the playoffs.
Before you get to see the Yankees in the post season, you will probably have to see SF.

Another great rotation. I bet a lot of Philly fans are thinking about this accomplishment, and with good reason. But...

1971 Baltimore Orioles
101-57
4 20-game winners

W L ERA
Code:
Mike Cuellar 20	9	3.08
Pat Dobson 20	8	2.90
Jim Palmer 20	9	2.68
Dave McNally 21	5	2.89
Lost World Series (4-3) to Pittsburgh Pirates

Baseball Total and Average Payrolls, 2008 (OPENING DAY)
Code:
Team Total payroll Average salary
Yankees $209,081,579 $6,744,567

Red Sox $133,440,037 $4,765,716
White Sox $121,152,667 $4,487,136

Blue Jays $98,641,957 $3,522,927
Phillies $98,269,881 $3,388,617

Now, 2010 sees movement up the charts

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/salaries/teams
2010 Team Payrolls
Code:
No.	Team	Payroll	Average
1.	New York Yankees	$206,333,389	$8,253,336
2.	Boston Red Sox	$162,747,333	$5,611,977
3.	Chicago Cubs	$146,859,000 $5,439,222
4.	Philadelphia Phillies	$141,927,381	$5,068,835

I applaud the Phils for putting the $$ people spend on their team back into the team. But I think the payroll conversation is getting old.

Football was cool when you could actually hit people. Now its becoming a little bit less of a bad ass sport. Every week there are stupid calls and stupid fines..

Rangers lost the main guy that kept the Yanks bats silent for 2 games.
Doesn't help that the Yanks were playing like 12 year olds for the last month of the season. Totally different team then a year ago at that point.

it won't happen, Grienke has a no trade clause, so he has to agree to where the royals want to trade him, now he has agreed to be traded however, he doesn't want to go to: New York, Boston, Philly, or pretty much anytime with a big stage, if you disagree with me call Francesca this afternoon and get screamed at lol....it will be funny....he has had serious mental issues in the past.....Grienke will not go to new york, and KC's price for him is very, very high

said the fan of what appears to be the #1 payroll in the NL for 2011, and quite possibly the #3 payroll in MLB. feel free to climb off the payroll whiner wagon, it's not like you are a kc royal fan. payroll comments ring a bit hollow.

There have been a number of players say no to NY and Philly. Not real big news. good for CL for going where he wanted to go. as he said it had nothing to do with ny or not wanting to be there, it had everything to do with his past experience with charlie manual & philly.

Nah, they're OK with it. According to the media up there they didn't REALLY want Lee....

I can't wait until April, I just hope the Phillies bats don't continue their slump from last year or it's going to be an epic fail this year with the pitching staff we have. Anything less than a ring is complete failure.

You get it. Congrats, like it or not you are now the Yankees of the NL. And I will continue to root for both teams except when they play head to head.

...and I'll happily agree with that. As much as I hate the Yankees and their scumbag fans they do what it takes to win. The main reason I'm laughing about this Lee deal is because the Yankees and their fans have this arrogance to them that they can just buy whoever they want...that they can just throw money at a player and since it's NY said player will just automatically go there. This time it blew up in their faces....other than that this type of stuff happens all of the time. Players sign with different teams for less money every year.
