Right, but bringing it full circle, that seems (to me) like the illegality of it is because they are non-factory and non-DOT approved restraints so you may not technically be wearing a (legally defined) seat belt in the eyes of a police officer. Not because a 5 pt harness system is less safe than a basic 3 point. The danger comes in improper mounting and placement.

And right back round teh circle, old cars came "safe" from factory without belts, so you adding belts is illegal and unsafe in the same way a 5 pt is on a newer car.

Who said they came "safe" from the factory without belts? Back then the factory said we will make your car safe for more money. Seatbelts were an option!

Didn't the early Vipers ( I believe the GTS) come with 4 point harnesses from the factory?
