Magnaflow Performance Muffler SOUND?
I recently had a Magnaflow Performance Muffler #12266 installed (a Midas friend Manager did a PERFECT WELD) and was a little disappointed in the actual sound. At idle, it sounded almost stock and it really is hard to tell at highway speeds. Now I was looking at sound clips and one company stated it needs about 400 miles on it before it "settles" in. Anybody find that when they installed their muffler, it actually did improve the deeper growl overall as it broke in? Thanks

Thanks, but i would imagine that it should sound better with headers and no cats. I was asking if someone here added a Magnaflow Muffler with no other mods to the exhaust system. My 1991 Formula L98 had a BORLA with Edlebrock headers and hogged out dual cats and it really had a nice rumble when most of those L98 engines did not sound that great compared to an LT1 or the LS1.

I had one with no other mods wayyyyy back when. It will get louder but don't expect it to sound like a racecar.

Typically Magnaflow has a little more rumble than stock at idle and can be a good amount louder (with a nice tone) when part throttle or above - have a MF catback on my L98 GTA - I like it, not too obnoxious.
Each brand of muffler has a distinctive sound - Corsa for example can be loud as F and is very agressive sounding, MBRP can sound similar to Magnaflow, but is going to be louder.

I ran a used magnaflow for several years on the stock exhaust and always felt it was too quiet (pretty much a deep bass note), never got louder over time. So I put a cutout on. But cutout with stock manifolds/ypipe sounds like trash, so I did LTs and catted y. Sounded better but still not loud enough. So I swapped to a hooker aerochamber. Then switched to ORY and ditched the cutout since it always leaks. Now I have an unbranded muffler that essentially doesn't muffle anything, and I think I'm happy with it... for now haha

when i had a flowmaster exhaust put on my ram i was very disappointed with the sound and it sounded a little louder than stock. after a few hundred miles or so it really woke up and was the sound i wanted. he's right it does take a few hundred miles to wake up.

the reason your Borla exhaust was loud and had a nice rumble is because only half of the exhaust gas went through the actual muffler. the borla cat backs for these cars have the main pipe split and a pass through restrictor plate(s) setup funnels exhaust out one tailpipe unmuffled and the other tailpipe it is muffled. essentially a blend of muffled and unmuffled giving it a unique sound. (driver side tailpipe = muffled and pass side tailpipe = unmuffled )
see the photo here:
https://www.autohance.com/borla-1488...vrxGgJcOvD_BwE
that is a totally different setup than a magnaflow exhaust setup or any other cat-back exhaust kit for these cars
I bought a magnaflow cat back kit for my 2006 dodge ram 1500 from CTW MOTORSPORTS and installed it right there at Paul Huryk's shop in a few quick hours. it was indeed louder than stock exhaust. It was definitely a different quieter sound for the first 300 or so miles and then it opened up. I love the way it sounds now after about 2 years of being in use. It sounds perfect for this truck... which is not an fbody, but I am just giving you another magnaflow related example.

In my opinion, Magnaflow is on the more mild side of aftermarket mufflers (especially for f-bodies).
However, every aftermarket muffler I've experienced opens up after a little bit.

You can get a SOLID plate from BORLA and cut out the center section with about the size of half dollar. I used this to get a really nice deep tone on the Formula.
Has anybody ever noticed that there must be about 15 muffler companies that make a system for the 5.0 Mustang and everyone sounds throaty. Some even sound better than a NASCAR. I don't know why, but maybe it's because of the horizontal design that is unique to this system.

Mustangs sound the way they do because of the dual pipes and h-pipe equalizer. Not much different than a 1st or 2nd gen f-body with a similar style exhaust.

I called Magnaflow today and asked about the "break in "period. Yes, it will get some deeper volume in time. The muffler that was made for these models, was meant to be an OEM REPLACEMENT, so sound was not a priority. He suggested to wind it out at highway speeds and move the packing around for the next 400 or so miles. I was disappointed that a company that does advertising for performance cars would sell something that you can get from a Midas shop.

story of my life right now
The Y with my LPP headers is super ******. I think this merge might help the rasp a bit...
I have never heard of a break in period either on mufflers

It depends on the muffler design. If it has material in the muffler, it will get compacted over time and lose its effectiveness at muffling sound. Most performance mufflers do not use the material which is why they are also usually louder.
