hmm, decisions

ok, so most of you know i have the chrome zr1's on my car right now. the car sits at stock height right now, and they *barely* fit. there's some marks on the wheel wells and the tires where the car is hitting them over bumps.

most of you also know that i have lowering springs and bilstein shocks sitting in my garage. i really want to get them on soon, but i get the feeling that i'll have some real tough issues with the 11" zr1's fitting in the back. i'm pretty sure that the stock 16 x 8.5" wheels will fit even with the car lowered.

also, on the zr1's, the rear wheels could use some new tires. what's on there now are one drag radial which is in decent shape, and some other tire, i can't even remember what kind. the point is, the rear wheels could use a new set of tires, and al can tell you 315's are really expensive. i could probably get 4 245's for the price of 2 315's. BUT, the 16" rims could probably use some new tires too.

so the way i see it, i have a few choices.

1) keep the zr1's, sell the stock 16's, and forget about lowering.

2) sell the zr1's, get new tires for the stock 16's, and lower

3) try to trade the zr1's straight up for some 17" ws6 wheels with new tires, and try to fit those with the springs

what should i do? j0n has a friend who is ready to buy my 16"s right now...

keep the ZR1's, sell the 16's (or keep around for some snow tires), put 245's in the front and the lowest profile 275's you can find in the rear, try that and it will probably work, 315's look mean as hell but viper size brings viper prices

the 275's are fine all teh way around, even with the car lowered.
a lot of those marks are the result of a soft factory suspension allowing too much movement side to side under "spirited" cornering.
if you switch back to a 16inch tire or run any width or height stagger from front to rear you will sacrifice any handlign that the shock and spring package would have gained.
for teh future look into and upgraded panhard, something adjustable, to properly recenter the rear after the car is lowered and to prevent deflection under cornering.

Tim - Pat already has an APHR....remember me asking you if you knew how to adjust it when you were laying under his car in his driveway?!?!?

So the ZR1s that you have are 17x9 fronts and 17x11 rears? If so, I would say to go 17x9 or 9.5 all around, and upgrade using the suspension parts you have. It would be nice to keep the 16's for snow tires, but if you have to sell them to make this financially feasable, then go for it.

Just my $.02

well, if i try to trade the zr1's for ws6 wheels, i could then sell the 16's to j0n's friend for $200 cash. then i could still use all the suspension stuff.

i was thinking if i really need snow tires, i could probably pick up a steel wheel/snow tire combo. but i don't really drive in the snow.

I would replace these.1993-1997 rear jounce bumper 10164173 part#
You would need the one for a 98 of course.
Also from slp Jounce Bumper. 80046 part#

The jounce bumber from slp fits between the factory jounce bumper.
Also when you put the bilstiens in with the lowered springs the car will not travel as much if at all.

Replace the stock jounce bumper and also buy the one from slp and this should allow you to run your 11" rims with 315s out back.

I know they have to same name but the jounce bumper from the factory is different from the one slp offers. You will need them both.

This doesn't mean you won't rub but it will help alot. I think it won't rub at all. I could be wrong.

Hope this helps alittle
Joe

Edit also you will need ajustable panhard rod like njspeeder said. You will need lower control arm relocation brakets. I have bmr weld ons they work well. I ran 1.7s 60' times after the relocation brakets 1.64 60'. They help alot.

i already have an adjustable panhard rod. it evened out the clearance, but i'm still rubbing over bumps. i'll look into those rear bumper things, but i think i'm gonna go with trading the zr1's for ws6's. idunno if they're worth the hassel, unfortunately

i guess another option would be to trade the 11 inchers for some 9.5's and run 9.5's all around.

those bumber things are cheap and easy to install. Before giving up on your 11" rims I would try it. If your car is lowered you might need them anyway even with the 9.5 rims. They help for sure. I run 9.5 rim with 285/40/17 and lowered 1 1/4 inches. Without the slp jounce spacer it rubs. With them no rubbing.
