Damn good question. Find this out.
I'm guessing they half assed the backlash or contact pattern.

I'm not even going to laugh like the other guys, because I have a feeling the shop told you this.
Read this:
http://www.4x4now.com/gt0999.htm
Note the name at the top. Randy Lyman, or the Randy in Randy's ring and pinion. All gear manufacturers recommend a break in, especially for street use. If your gears are galled or damaged due to improper break in chances are they will NOT be covered under warranty.

for street gears there is definately a break in period. Get your facts straight before you insert foot in mouth..

so how many miles did you put on the car with the backlash too tight and the pinion bolt too loose?
and be honest.......how hard did you beat on the car to test the new gears......
your rear is not long for this word depending on the answers to these 2 questions

My rebuild service includes tearing down the rear diff, cleaning the housing and all parts to be re-used and inspecting them for damage or excessive wear, then installing all new races, bearings, your new gear set, and setting everything at the proper backlash and pinion depth using new pro grade shims which are a better design than those commonly found in "overhaul kits", this design makes it impossible for shims to walk out of their intended location once they are tightened down.
labor- $300
parts prices may vary
Josh

Great write up!! that might explain a few things for me. Two years ago I was working at a repair shop and deicded to put a posi unit in my rear ( this is before I researched things lol ) turns out it didnt work, so I put my old diff in and had my friend use a back lash tool cause i didnt know how it worked. about 2 month worth of driving later on it ( cause my car was not runnign for 10 months) i changed my fluid and bearings and seals for the axles, and took off to conneticut. before that I drove around town so it wasent very long trips. By the time I got to conneticut i hada bad humming sound, and drove back home with it. here my passenger side bearing locked up, but why? I went to remove the axles to replace it, and as I turned the diff, i was missing teeth!! here the metal shards from the teeth messed the bearing up. The ring and pinion were set too tight, so I guess he knew just as much asbout it as i did about the tool then lol. so moral of the story is, dont let friends do the work thats for professionals.
