What would you offer?

A buddy of mine is looking at a 99 Camaro with a 3.8l v6.

Run down of the car:
113000 miles
A4
Flowmaster exhaust
cloth interior
Fm/Am/Tape radio
T-tops
Chrome wheels

Bad things about the car:
Inspection from 07
Bad o2's all the way around
Possibly a bad cat
rear bumper may have been repainted
Radio is missing volume knob and is currently in lock out mode
Drivers side power window doesn't work

The place is asking $3000. I haven't run a KBB on it, but I'd guess that that's about what they'd call for at a dealer. I went there tonight to talk to the guy and addressed all of the problems with him to help my buddy out. I had to leave early, but my buddy was able to get the guy to agree to do the deal for $2500. I told him to wait on it until atleast the weekend. What do you guys think the car is worth? It has a flowmaster exhaust on the car and the tips seemed to have some paint overspray on them so i think the rear bumper may have been repainted. I think if he can get the car down to $2200 it'd be a good deal, but at $2500 I still don't think that it's worth it.

not knowing the overall wear on the car or the maintenance history makes it harder to judge but imo its not that bad of a price. $2500 out the door would be great. $2200 i think you are going to be really beating them up. if it definitely needs a cat see if you can get it replaced and buy the car for $2500. i think that would be ideal. or get it priced out at a shop and tell them to work with you more. point out some more bs. bring a cute girl too

Agreed.

If they were to fix the radio, cats, O2's, and everything else, llet you get under the car and check for the damage under the suspicious rear bumper, and clean it up so that it will pass a state inspection(don't let them inspect it for you)................then maybe I would offer them 2000-2400 for it.

Really it sounds like a stretch unless they can come way down on the price. Odds are if the car was so poorly cared for that it smoked that many parts then I would have trouble trusting it for much of anything.

I agree with the other posts. 2200 even sounds a bit steep. I'd say somewhere between 1500 would be very fair and 2000 would be the absolute top dollar i'd be willing to pay for it. The car sounds like it needs quite a bit of work, and honestly, the mileage is pretty high up there. There are a lot of other camaros you can find in that year that have similar or fewer miles and less known problems.

Ok, i'm going to tell me buddy to try and get it for $1700 max. When I told the salesperson about the cat being bad, his responce was "well maybe the person took it off to make the car louder", and then when I told him the car needs inspection and it's illegal to do that, he just gave that look like "what do you expect for $3000".

In my opinion, the dealer should have fixed the car before selling, not just trying to flip junk. I would stay away from that car. It may sound like a good deal, but after all the work its going to need, it won't seem like a deal anymore.

Look for something with a traceable history, I've made the mistake, and now I know. Always buy an honest car.

If that is their attitude, just stay away from it all together. It's not worth the hassle of buying that pile and being stuck with it.

For less than he is asking for the 6banger you can buy Tsar's Trans Am that is advertised in our classifieds.

The car is not for me. Tsar's trans am would be great, but the kid is 17 and will be on his parent's insurance policy and they are saying no to a V8. Also Tsar's car isn't perfect either. I'm trying to find atleast a 96 car so he doesn't have to worry about emissions. I just looked up parts and labor for the car and so for I've come up with a bill of $840+tax going off of parts from Autozone and a labor rate of $90/hr. I told my friend to get the car for $2100 max. Also, the cat may not be bad. My dad(a retired mechanic) said that since both front o2's are bad, the car is running ****** and might be making the rear o2 think the cat is bad when really it's just the exhaust in general.

By law the car has to pass inspection when purchased from a dealer unless specified otherwise in writing. If vehicle is purchased with "As Is" or similar on the paperwork you're SOL.

Any vehicle purchase in the state of NJ with a state minimum(30day/1k mile) or better warranty must pass inspection. If you purchase a vehicle 'as is' that is all you get.

That car really sounds like a heap of ****. I wouldn't spend someone else's money on it.

The car is being sold "as-is" so it's going to be hard to try to get this guy to move on the price as much as I want him to. I personally would not want the car, but the kid is set on it because he feels like this is his only time that he'll have the opportunity to get a sports cars. I keep trying to tell him that the car may be a can of worms but it's hard to convince him. I bought my car last year with 175K on it and have had nothing major go wrong with the car. The main thing that is scaring me away from this car is the fact that the inspection is over a year and a half over due which means this car has probably had bad o2's in it for atleast that long and that's obviously not healthy for the engine.

lol. The fact that its a 2-door, has t-tops, and chrome wheels makes him think it's a sports car. I'm fighting an uphill battle because he grew up in Brooklyn so his Guido mentality is hard to persuade.

I'd offer the guy a pack of gum and a crisp $10 bill.

Move on, lots of better cars out there.

Why is this his only chance? I don't think I would ever really buy a car off a lot...they are all pieces of meat. I found out my '79 was a "lot" car at one point in its long life, and it had a frame rail fixed with bondo, theres some bondo on the body, and various other little odds and ends that were, to me, rigged. I will never buy a car off a used car lot...unless its a reputable dealership and has a warranty.

There are plenty of f-bodys out there, of all years. Now is the time to get a good deal, because of the economy. It may look like $840 now, but I am willing to bet it will be way more than that in the end. Has your friend ever actually replaced an o2 sensor? It can get tricky really fast, especially if it snaps of, or the hex portion gets rounded off. And whos to say it hasn't been in a wreck? The car could go through front tires in 10k miles
