shocks

I am kind of on a tight budget and need shocks for my 84 firebird really bad. I was looking at KYB Gr-2 and was wondering If they were a good shock for the money, I wont need them for carving corners because my car is set up more as a street-strip. I think anything will be a great upgrade then my worn out stock shocks, But I need to figure it out soon, because I would like to send it out by august 2nd to have the shocks installed and the car inspected.

whats the price difference between those and a bilstien or koni yellow?

Tru2Chevy 07-22-2008 06:46 PM

Install them yourself Matt....it's very easy.

And do you want a more drag oriented shock, or a street oriented shock? Gotta compromise somewhere.....

KYBs are something like 300+ for a complete set, Koni/bilstien are more upwards of 700 a set

I would love to install them my self, But Ive come to a conclusion that when I do things my self, they either catch on fire, or end up unfinished and some one else's nightmare.

I would Like a more street oriented shock, after all, the hour it will take me just to get to a track verses then 14 seconds( estimate) it will take me to get down the track.

Tru2Chevy 07-22-2008 10:02 PM

If that 400 is really pushing close to 400 hp, you should be looking more at mid-low 12 second slips in a car that isn't optimized for the strip.

WayFast84 07-22-2008 10:10 PM

I know, But I'm just estimating(the car has a real restrictive exhaust). The car pulls great, But the only other cars I have been in too compare it to are Rons 98 and Jakes 02, and I dont remember how they felt.

The car needs shocks, lca's and a panhard bar, it also needs a hood. I think I should do springs at the same time of shocks, No?

BonzoHansen 07-22-2008 10:25 PM

What ones did Josh tell you to get? I would not think bilsteins, kys or koni are good drag racing options.

If they are really bad, and you car sits at stock height w/stock springs and $$ is tight, parts store monroes or something will be a cheap improvement.

WayFast84 07-23-2008 02:49 PM

I started removing the rear shocks, I got both top bolts undone. Im waiting for some WD-40 to spray on the bottom bolts before I remove them. Im going with some NAPA rear shocks for the moment. UBG suggested I put any rear shock in, and get a good set of struts, Put the struts on once, and later down the road when I have more $$ I can change the rears by my self.

BonzoHansen 07-23-2008 03:11 PM

Sounds like a good (and familar sounding lol) plan. Also, WD40 <> good thread penetrant. PB Blaster or equivalent.

WayFast84 07-23-2008 04:05 PM

I got both shocks off, I didn't need WD40 just some extra leverage. It took me about 4 hours, but It took me an hour and a half just to get the wheels off, car jacked up right, and then another 10 min on the phone with UBG.

ins0mnia24 07-23-2008 04:26 PM

I had Koni Single Adjustables on all 4 corners of my car..
They worked great on the street but after running the car a few times.
I ended up trading them to a friend who decided he wanted Koni's for a set of QA1 Single Adjustable.
The QA1's with stock Springs feel better on straight lines and they handle just as good on the street as the Koni set I had..

Nice.

good job matt, next time will take 2 hours, and the time after that 1

JSPERFORMANCE 07-23-2008 08:46 PM

For the last time your springs are fine.

You need sub frame connectors too if you want to continue to be able to close your doors.

GR2's all around are cheap and work great. My IROC has them on all 4 corners and I don't really have a problem getting down the track.

WayFast84 07-23-2008 10:33 PM

All right, I'm sold on the GR-2's then. I'm ordering them from summit tomorrow at $22 a piece.

Matt said in an earlier post in this thread that it will take an hour or more to get to any track. I believe he could get to E-town in less than 30 minutes from where his is though....

I used to live in Edison , it takes about 35 min with no traffic and being lucky with the lights.

Theres no such thing as no traffic anymore. I had a job oppurtunity at ETOWN this week for the parking lot for pinks but I had to turn it down because I dont have my own ride yet, map quest said 40 min I believe i would ad 15 min of traffic and wrong turns because map quest is wrong all the time.

And another thing is that I wouldnt be racing at etown, I would rather race at island, and support a sponsor

You don't even drive yet , so what makes you the Waysmart on traffic ? Did you look that on map quest or just stay at a Holiday Inn ?
