Chips and Moduels for a V6

Is it worth it to install a chip on my car? Has anybody installed one, if so, what did it do? I've heard that HyperTech sucks. I heard that JET makes some really good chips. Is this something worth looking into? The mods that I intend to do are listed in my signature. I'm also going to throw a POSI in too. This car will be used for daily driving. If you guys could give me more incite on what a chip does etc. that'd be great.

My understanding is when you install a chip, it will basically increase how much fuel, air is sucked in. This will cause your engine to have more power at a lower RPM :?: :?:

Again, thanks for the help in advance.

If you want a chip, it's best to go custom. None of the off-the-shelf or mail order tunes will be suited to your car very well, as they are all generic tunes.

Find FasterThanYou on here, he burns custom chips for a pretty reasonable fee.

Use your common sence. What do you THINK the ecm has the ability to do. Does it control fuel? spark? air? Here's a hint, one of those 3 things doesn't belong :) . You really shouldn't waste your money on a chip for a relatively untouched v6 engine. Posi, gears, etc. don't do much to warrent needing chip tuning. If you want to invest in the burning equipment yourself it's probably only going to cost you less than $200 for everything to do unlimited chips. Or you can hire my time to help you. I'll show you the basics but I just don't have the free time to spend helping everybody with their chips like I used too. I do it for a select few because they're doing amazing things with their vehicles 8)

i was also thinking about either buying a chip or a tuner and using it on my 2001 3800 firebird, the thing is as of right now i havent modded it yet, the first thing i was gonna do is put a CAI system on it. as of right now what your saying is it wouldnt be worth spending the $2-400, unless i do more mods?

NJSPEEDER 07-13-2005 07:07 PM

tunign is always helpful. since you have an '01 you can get hptuners and get started right away.
the nice thing about doing it yourself is that you can immediately update the cars tuning for every little mod and not be stuck wondering if you are meeting the full potential of the newly installed parts.

so your saying get one of the handheld tuners and not the chips?

Savage_Messiah 07-13-2005 07:31 PM

Handheld tuners are just as bad as the chips... and for an 01 you would be reprograming. HP Tuners is a computer program, put it on your laptop, connect your laptop to the diagnostic port, and you can tune

[/rant of someone who knows next to nothing about tuning]

Brando56894 07-14-2005 01:00 AM

ohh i see, i thought it was a product of some sort at first then i thought nah he prolly means anything that'll tune your hp in general, so i was right... no i just gotta find/buy a new charger for my laptop also where can i buy it at? or if any one can "lend" me a copy pm me

Savage_Messiah 07-14-2005 08:27 AM

www.hptuners.com

Even if they could "lend" you a copy, I don't think anyone here that has it would. Paying for the program = support for better software in the future

It wouldn't be very easy to have someone "lend" it to you because they would have to have the same year 3.8 f-body, and you would have to live near them because only the original cable will work.

Much better to buck up and spend the cash, the guys at HPTuners are awesome!

the cable is matched to the cd...splitting it has not been a good option for most.

Brando56894 07-14-2005 07:36 PM

just an option cuz $500 is alotta money to shell out for a program....and u said u'd do a full tune for me for $200 but what does that consist of? and would it would be worth it to get my car tuned if i only added a CAI system, whisper airlid and K&N filter? cuz that all im plannin on doin in like the next 4-6 months since im not gonna be workin my 1st semester at college...

thats a decision you'd have to make...iif you dont plan on adding anything for a while I'd say its probably worth it. Once I get a good a/f ratio setup as well as your timing its not gonna change horribly ifi you start addinig little stuff here & there since the maf can compensate for a good amount of stuff especially at part throttle. If you ever do need a full retune I wont charge you an arm & a leg considering I'd aleady have the license as well as your bin file making it easiser tot change things...the only time consuming part would be hooking up the w/b & the drive.

w/b = wideband O2 sensor, helps him adjust your air/fuel ratio better.

if your cars idling rough with a stock cam its probably not the tune...i would look towards an ignition issue such as plugs, wires or something else...but like justin said I use a wideband o2 sensor to dial in your air/fuel ratio at wot.

If you are talking about the hypertech, then yes, it really does suck.

If you are talking about Foff's tuning abilities, there are dozens of guys around that will vouch for him. You can also check the tuning sections of CamaroV6.com and FullThrottleV6.com, as well as LS1Tech.com. Foff helps all of those guys with tuning issues.
