E- cam install
 

Im just using this thread as a walkthrough to help me with my cam install. If you can, PLZ explain what to do next.

The balancer isnt matching up to the timing tab, whats my next step?

you don't have the pullers and installers for the balancer thats #1

it would be in your best interest to remove the oil pan as well and clean it - it will make putting the timing cover back on a lot easier and gluing it up so nothing leaks --#2

caution if you are not very carefully taking the cam out it will scratch the cams bearings it ( the cam ) has to be rotated as its removed - the lobes on it will scratch the bearings going out as well as going in - they make a tool for that as well ( holding the cam so it can be easily removed ) a 3 inch long 5/16 - 18 bolt will also do the job #3

i also would change the oil pump but for sure you must check the oil pump drive shaft it has a plastic retainer on it and they are always broken ( heat mostly causes it ) but you want it to be their it keeps the shaft from chaffing the slot in the pump #4

and for sure you have no way to check the cam you bought to see if it is on spec ( degreeing it ) i guess is out of the question -- #5

you can rent the tools for the removal its a 3 slotted hole looking thing first as you will need time to clean all that you remove first before installing so only rent the take off for now -- #6

once you have the balancer off look at the spot the seal rides on if its a high milage motor it will have a gruve worn in it if so the make a gasket kit that comes with a repair cone that installs to fix it instead of buying a new balancer -- good luck -- jz

Is that sitting on the pan??? You aren't jacking/supporting that thing by the balancer, are you? Spring $35 for an engine stand, or borrow one from someone. Correct tools FTW.

I know UBG offered to help you, and I think some others did too. Take them up on it. You will be glad you did. Don't rush it & screw up, trust me. Been there, done that, learn from other's mistakes.

I agree... First thing get an engine stand and clean the block up first. Then start removing everything.

Its not the stand im having trouble getting, its the lift to put the engine on the stand.

Do you have a stand (and bolts)? I'm sure someone can come up with a hoist & help you.

If you can't afford a stand you might be able to work on a cradle. Make one out of wood if you have to. Don't set an engine on an oil pan you plan to use.
