obd1 to obd2?
ok guys within the next couple weeks im going to be swapping out my 406 and lt1 for a complete ls1 with auto trans. engine wiring and pcm. what would i need or have to do to upgrade my 86 monte carlo to obd2?

You'll pretty much have to rewire the car, and you'll still be put on the rollers at the inspection station.

well if thats the case is there any way i can just connect an obd2 plug somewhere in my engine bay to make tuning easier?

The OBDII port can be placed anywhere you want....

yes you can place it anywhere, however, you need to first get one. It is part of the dash harness not the engine harness so if you're picking up just an engine/trans/ecm combo... you don't have it. you can hack up a dash harness and make it work, OR the smart thing to do, would be buy a stand alone ls1 harness, MUCH easier for an engine swapped vehicle. Then sell off the oem harness to make back some money. I did a lt1 in an older vette and a tpi motor in a monte SS, i used a custom stand alone harness each time and wiring was a peice of cake.
also do u have a fuel injection gas tank? Fuel injection sending unit with pump? |
where can i get that kind of harness? and no i dont have a fi pump and tank yet

...yea... "painless wiring" is always an option, but i didnt like their prices plus for my LT1 swap they didnt have a harness that would work for a 96(that was in 99 so now i bet they do)
for my LT1 into a 79 vette swap with a 89 700r4, i used Centech Wiring. www.centechwire.com for the speed density TPI into my 87 Monte SS, i used a guy who custom makes them, also does special prom tuning. He's very knowledgeable and has recently gotten into LSx motors now as well. I believe he offers harnesses too. www.Chevythunder.com both of these other places will be, or should be, hundreds cheaper than Painless and I have experience with both of them and they are good quality. Both had let me also get around VATs, the lt1 with a plug in module, and the TPI he programmed it out. As for fuel system, not sure if you looked into it, but easiest thing to do is get a grand national fuel tank and sending unit with pump, or get a fuel tank from a 4.3l v6 fuel injected monte from the early 80's. |
