is this a ground problem?

i put the motor in the camaro over the weekend. i started it up today. everything seems to be working except the Tachometer, odometer and check engine light. they remain off.

before the motor was put in, i hooked up all the grounds together and ran a wire to the negative battery terminal to see the mileage and what not and everything worked, so this leads me to believe thats what the problem is.

anybody have any ideas?

thanks!

Tranny all plugged in and what not?

98tadriver 04-22-2009 06:08 PM

oh crap i thought i put this in electrical section, not in car entertainent. im not entertained by whats happening lol.

trans is all plugged in.

does it matter where all of the ground wires go to the engine? or can they be bolted up anywhere? or couldnt i just connect them all to one wire and go right to a good ground that way?

is there a fuse somewhere for your guages?

yep, but my gauges work fine. the only thing thats not lighting up is the check engine light and the odometer. i found out where one ground strap should go. do they all have to go to a specific spot? or can i just join them all together and run it to the negative terminal?

madness410 04-22-2009 10:59 PM

im sure thats whats done to my car, all the grounds are linked together and hooked to the negative terminal, i havent had an electrical problem. but mine is also an 87 you have a 99 the computers and electrical mumbo-jumbo has changed a great deal.

in my limited experience working on cars when its something like this its usually something very dumb...like is there a possibly the bulb went out? lol

sweetbmxrider 04-23-2009 11:10 AM

i would swap bulbs around to ensure the CEL isn't burned out. i believe the instrument cluster should ground through wiring to the bcm.

98tadriver 04-23-2009 11:38 AM

i dont think the bulb is bad though, because the odometer and tachometer do not come on either. everything worked fine before the motor was in. everything but those 3 things are working. i found out where the ground straps go, so im going to take care of that today. if that doesnt work, Rob aka BarneyMobile sent me a wiring schematic to test the IPC (instrument panel cluster) circuit. ill check the bulb if i have to pull the cluster out

sweetbmxrider 04-23-2009 12:10 PM

oh i didn't realize they were previously working. if you have a test light, i would start probing for power and ground after you try relocating the ground straps.

i was looking at a couple wiring diagrams but couldn't pin point a specific ground that would affect only those two things.

98tadriver 04-23-2009 03:10 PM

FIXED!!! i put the grounds where they should be, but i think what Ultimately did it was when i checked the fuse panel inside the car and replaced the pwr accy fuse. the lights and everything lit up! yay!!! i guess the fuse popped during the motor swap or something. i dunno either way its electrically sound. now its running rough and threw a P0108 code for the baro/map sensor lol

sweetbmxrider 04-23-2009 03:57 PM

good **** man. is the map sensor on the back of the intake? maybe it was damaged during install or isn't plugged in?

98tadriver 04-23-2009 07:37 PM

yep its located on the back of the intake. i put the map sensor from the t/a on there. then after i hooked up hp tuners, the only code showing was a P0103 for the MAF input too high or something like that. working the bugs out one by one lol

NJ346 04-23-2009 09:55 PM

so is the car drivable yet ron?

GrandmasterCow 04-23-2009 10:11 PM

good job !

98tadriver 04-24-2009 12:21 AM

it doesnt want to idle and everytime i go to give it gas, it bogs like its not getting any fuel. i have to find out whats causing that

camaro2you 04-24-2009 07:58 AM

Ron start by cleaning the MAF with some rubbing alc. and then put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail when running and while sitting to make sure it holds pressure.

JW 04-24-2009 08:06 AM

Ron,

Just sell the car with engine and tranny to JW for $500 bucks!

Wait thats me! Yea thats a good idea!

JW :D
