what does this sound like to you guys....

lately my iroc has been a bitch to start... ill go to crank it over and it will take a while to start... it will turn and turn over but not start rite away... ill hit the gas like its carb'd and it will start..... tonight same thing took a while to crank it over and it started pretty rough i go for a 20 minute cruise check engine comes on and off once for about 15 seconds til i get on it a little bit... i get home... pull it in and shut it off.... go to start it rite away and i cant get it running....

any ideas anyone have this happen to them?

90 iroc 305 tpi motor

things im going to do... new gas cap that vents (current one does not vent and theres a lot of pressure when i take it off)

fuel filter

what do yous think thanks

i've got a 87 IROC and its a slow start too nowhere near as bad as yours sounds and for that i am sorry but did you think of the alternator? thats what mine will need within the next year

update

battery had more then enough volts on cold start... wires were tight... have spark to the coil... im going to check the fuel pressure tomorrow.... my one friend said it might be considering throttle affected it- i'd lean towards a prob with the TPS or Map sensor but both of those are new

Jared1970Chevelle 08-01-2010 10:12 PM

it was running.... let it run for about 15 minutes.... then shut it off and tried starting again and it wouldnt start it would just crank and crank

tell us what your fuel pressure is when it primes and when you crank it.

...and how fast does the pressure drop off when you shut off the engine?

It should hold 10+ psi at the gauge following shutdown, stuck-open injector(s) will drop it to zero as soon as the engine stops and the fuel pump is killed.

update again....

im going to try the fuel pressure tonight when my buddy brings his gauge up....

but i got it running again after it cranking for about 15 seconds.... i got 2 check engine lights out of it.... 22 and 45....

any ideas

22
TPS (Throttle position sensor) voltage low OR Fuel cutoff relay circuit open or shorted to ground.

45
Oxygen sensor rich error.

change the fuel filter if it hasnt been changed in a while!

Yeah a 2 year old TPS from where?

I'd start simple. Change the fuel filter first off.

Next step would be a fuel pressure gauge. Make sure your getting adequate pressure on the rail without it cranking. About 2 seconds after the key is turned on the rail should be primed and up to pressure. If its not I'd start looking at a stuck injector, faulty fuel pressure regulator, or bad fuel pump (doubtful on that one).

Easiest way to check for stuck injector is to start pulling spark plugs when it wont start. One of em is gonna be fouled if thats it.
