you can block off the water transfer from side to side BUT depends how old the motor is it - may not come off choke for 20 mins or so Because their is no heat for the choke and in the dead of winter...

their is an oil feed hole in the shaft on its bottom so rolling it over is easy it fits eather way BUT their is only one oil feed hole - lookin an older chilton book it might show you its location --

if the shafts are put in upside down ( real easy...
if the shafts are put in upside down ( real easy to do ) when you start it no oil pressure can come from the block via the heads to the shafts and will burn off the top of the push rods if your lucky...

my guess is he is having issues with the starter backing up on the motor ( timing to advanced ) and post ignition when he shuts it off it keeps running < the kind of old issue you do not get with...
