Ecotec will get better gas mileage than the v8s obviously while still providing sufficient power IMO. Then you don't have to build up the entire rest of the drivetrain either like you would with a 4.8/5.3.
Really depends on your driving but I used to get 16-17 city light footing a 1/2 ton no option regular cab pickup with the 4.8.
Being lighter you would probably get more like 18 city.
