The design of the wheel will play a part as well. If the spokes provide little to no support of the hoop then it's bound to have issues. I run a 40 series on the front and a 35 in the back. It's likely these rims are just soft but I've had a few dings fixed through the years. One was a legit pothole but everything else shouldn't have caused an issue.
