To understand Fender custom colors you have to know what the colors are based on. The answer, of course, is automobiles. Cars in the United States had more social influence than just about anything at the time (even more than Elvis). Fender's only in-house paint mixes during the 50's and 60's were Sunburst and Blond (and Candy Apple Red to a point: more on this color later). All other colors originated directly from the cars of the time, and most of these colors were from General Motor's cars.....

I was shown a few companies who sell kits to make your own guitar (replica) with some cutting, sanding and painting labor of your own. Pretty damn cool.

I bought a Saga kit about 10 years ago. My brother still plays it. I'm sure they have changed some since then but the quality was kinda cheap. The paint job turned out pretty bad but that was my fault. Played surprisingly good for a kit guitar.

Interesting page, I've never been a fan of Fender guitars tho. I've had mostly Ibanez and 1 Gibson.

My Gibson is an SG-Z, limited production for 6 months in 1998. I don't play anymore but I plan on keeping this one for awhile.

That was a good read! Never really knew much about how they picked the colors for their guitars. Years ago when I was taking lessons, my teacher was a big 60's/early 70's strat guy
