1998 Firehawk

http://wot.motortrend.com/6534470/ed...ted/index.html

Quote:
1998 Saw a new face for the venerable Firebird, as well as a new LS1 engine under the hood. The tuners at SLP weren't far behind with their own car, though controversy surrounded the existence of the car and as such, as few as six cars were rumored to have been made. SLP quickly ditched the awkward fixed headlights in favor of the stock pop-ups in 1999, but a few of these '98 cars snuck out and we got our hands on one long enough to run to 60 mph in 5.1 sec and down the quarter-mile in 13.6 sec at 104.5 mph.

What do you think of those headlights? I always assumed there was a '98 Firehawk and that it looked like the other LS1 versions from '99-'02. Didn't know they only built six. Then I found this on Firehawk.org:
http://www.firehawk.org/article/1356.html

Anyone know what the "controversy" was at the time? Here's a the test video of the car from Motor Trend. Apparently SLP was going to build 500 and had orders "pouring in."

I didn't know something like that was even produced. I like them A LOT better than the pop ups.

I'm not crazy about the look of the fixed headlights. It would have been nice if SLP could have incorporated the projectors into the hideaways. The regular headlights on my '02 suck.

Fixed units would look a lot better if they were color matched and actually put a decent projector in those housings. The best looking lights are the pop-up in my opinion only because they are entirely hidden. If you don't like the look, you only see them during the night so who cares.

Awhile back these lights were on eBay. They were listed as the prototype and the asking price was $25,000, YES THAT's $25,000. It was stated that the amount of R & D work was a ton of time and that this set was all that remained. The lights were by themselves and had never been installed on any car. All the documentation was there and it was said they could be fitted to the front of any Firehawk, but it would need extensive work as they were not made to drop in, but needed to be custom fitted, thus the R & D time and expense. SLP stated that these would make an excellent conversation display next to your Hawk!

+1 on the BLS kit
fixed lights don't work with the car especially not at SLP inflated prices ($25K)

I remember reading article back in 99 that SLP discontinued these headlights for several reasons. One being that they cost a pretty to install them and produce them and they found out in late 98 that the F-Body would cease to exist in 02 and again decided that it wasn't worth the cost
