Yes, positive. The $29.99 data plan is mandatory, and the phone is more or less useless for anything but calls / texts without it. The wifi hotspot is an option though.

I have the Droid Eris, its a cool phone but its buggy as hell..sometimes I think it has a mind of its own...After my company Verizon discount I only pay 70 bucks for everything (data plan, etc) which is a few more dollars then what i payed for my old regular phone and text.

Vitals, yeah the 20 bucks is for tethering. You can do that on the Storm 2 with the Wifi, but you have to pay the 20 to do that.
You could turn the X into a Wifi Router, for up to 5 other devices. So when your friends iPhone gets no reception, you could charge them 20 bucks a month to use your phone's wifi signal so that they can surf the web! People helping people!

If you get caught doing it they don't take to kindly to it, they charge you out the wazoo.

Figured. I have no need for it really. I dont 100% understand the whole reason behind it. Im paying for unlimited data, correct? And if that data is being sucked up by my laptop, or by my phone, does it matter?

Have you done it? Does it work well? I use an air card, which is supposedly a lot better than tethering and it's still MEH. Same with the MiFi.

I haven't done it myself but I've used the wifi and didn't really have any problems. The kid who was doing it said he keeps it under 5GB/mo and it slips by

Yea, I could see using it if you need to hop online with a laptop for a few minutes here and there, but I wouldn't use it much.
1/2 the reason I want a phone like this is so I can carry my laptop less.

let's see how the droid works tomorrow. my gf tripped when i ran up to her and she and i fell in the pool and i went in also. it was in my shorts i tryed to grab it and throw it out of my pocket while in mid air doing a front flip to save it. i almost cracked my head on the side and the phone shut off when i went flying out of the pool.

Very happy with Droid here but waiting for something past the X before I upgrade. I am not big on a touch screen only phone just yet. I like an actual keyboard which adds size to the phone but just a personal preference. The touch screens are good but just not loving it yet.

Stick the phone in a sealed bag of dry white rice(yes i mean rice) overnight. the rice will absorb the moisture out of the phone much like silica and it should work.
If not use the insurance that you should have on the phone and pay 50 for a new replacement.
If you do buy a new one give me the old one and i will repair it so you can sell it and we split the profit

The Motorola Droid 2 is coming out soon. Same specs as the new X (1 ghz processor, 8 mb camera, etc.) but with a better keyboard.
I've have the Droid for about a week or so now. Still haven't figured out everything but its quite impressive. The only things I dislike are the slide out keyboard (It just doesn't feel right but I rarely use it.) and I haven't figured out yet if you can customize the touch screen keyboard.

Yeah, im the opposite of Brian, I dont like keyboards. Ive grown used to the keyboad of the Storm. A screen of that size compared to the massive jobber on the X...should be a huge improvement.
