Your pics Bad64Chevelle... and to answer a couple questions

First of all I havent posted pics like this in a long time because of other people stealing them and claiming my work as their own and I have since ceased to be a sponsor which should be rectified shortly.

Since this is a members truck and he asked me for the pictures I figured that I should post them for him and to answer a few questions I've recieved in pm's recently (2nd part of post after the truck pictures) anyway enjoy and feel free to pm me or post any questions. Anything pertaining to a detail will have to be in a pm until I resume being a sponsor here on the boards and get my website updated.

The Detail

This detail was a hybrid stage 2-3 polishing with less of the frills because his main concern was getting the paint back to excellent condition. I used a stage 3 on the most beat up areas and a stage 2 on the rest of the truck followed by wolfgang concours estate glaze as this truck is stored outside and I'd like a definate answer as to how long it will last outdoors because most of the cars I detail are stored inside. Also no trim dressing etc. was used as there has been very heavy rains in the area and I did not want the dressing to run down the paint on his way home. Overall this was a very basic daily driver type detail.

He also wanted a very basic cleanup on the inside as it is a work truck and will get dust, mud etc. back in there again. So the carpet was vacummed and all interior surfaces were cleaned and protected.

Some before's

Some 50/50 shots during polishing (excuse my odd positions I was climbing over wire's, products, etc.)

Sorry about the afters but there were severe thunderstorms so I didnt want to pull the truck out of the shop and to be honest I was working on 3 hours of sleep and at this point was just exhausted so I didnt take very many.

Now for the second part of my post to answer some of the questions I have been getting lately.

Q: "I paid someone to detail my car and a month later all the swirls are back.. why?"

A: Could be a few reasons... it could be improper paint care after the detail and they are new swirl marks etc. Or it could be the detailer they hired is a hack job and does not completely remove the swirls but instead uses products with fillers to hide them. As the oils and fillers wear away you will start to see swirls etc. again.

Q: "Why is getting my car detailed so expensive when the guy at the car wash/ mobile van etc. says he'll do the same thing for $100-$150"

A: He simply cannot do the same thing for that much first of all the products I use simply cost to much. Materials alone cost me $40-$75 to do one car not including wear and tear on equipment. Secondly is the time I take (remember I do this as a hobby on my weekends) so I don't make much unless I'm doing full concours details that take 20+ hours. So if you want to compare with a car wash etc. I will simply tell you to take it there and give you my card for later when you are not happy with their work.

Also keep in mind that there are some other excellent detailers in the tri state area and some of them work out of mobile vans etc. They do great work but I would be very wary if they are not comfortable letting you watch them work showing you what they are doing and explaining what products they are going to use in detail and why. No matter who you go to a quality detailer is going to charge for his equipment and time and it will not be a car wash style detail.

Finally just to show that a detail will last if the paint is properly maintained here is a few pics of my car from today after I washed it. Yes it is garage kept but has been outside and covered in dirt and mud blown up from the recent thunderstorms while it was being worked on. The car hasnt been touched since march except for simple wash's and wipe downs with quick detailer. Keep in mind these pics were taken under high power lights so every speck of dust etc. is going to show.

Thanks again Rich. The truck came out great and my dad was very pleased. Since its solely a farm truck at this point it gets beat up a lot and I know he never thought it would look like that again. He knew he wanted it to go to you after the work you did on my Charger. I will put the pictures of that up for you soon.

They do not give the detail justice...but this was what I got for you Rich. I will get some close ups tomorrow after I clean it up again. The metallic in the paint never popped as much as it did until after you got it all squared away for me.

Rich, that's some amazing work!!! The truck seriously looks brand-new again. I have to ask, what do you use on the interior plastics and rubber floormats, because they came out great! They just look factory fresh, not shiny. I've heard of people using Barkeepers' Friend mixed with water but I'm a little leery to try that out. Any recommendations?

Nothing was used on the rubber floor mats they were just hit with a degreaser and water. I normally dont dress rubber floor mats. If they are in bad shape I'll use some 303 aerospace protectant on them.

As far as the rest of the trim it depends on the detail. One of my favorites is ultima interior shampoo followed by ultima interior guard. I also like 303 aerospace protectant, dp interior dressing and a couple others. Normally I do steam clean all the plastics if they look dirty just to get the gunk off so I dont have to scrub it to much.

That is ana... she was assisting me wiping down but spent 3/4 of the day on the phone and lounging around watching me sweat my ass off. Then of course she wanted me take her out to dinner for all her hard work

I saw it in the garage next door before it sat out in death row. We had hard time pushing it cause of how slick the paint is. lol
