who still has their stock rear?
I am looking at a car and am very interested in buying it. Its got all the goods and is making over 450 hp and 400+ torque to the wheels. Only problem is that its on the stock rear. How long do u think itll hold up. Car will not see any track time untill the spring/summer until i can save up for a 9".

Drive gently and a 10bolt can last forever, but why would you buy a car putting out good power and think about driving gently?
Truth is, it could break tomorrow, it could break next week, it could break next year. The only thing anyone can promise you is that it will break. Talk to JSPerformance about a rear, he has a hook up with one of the companies, I forget which one though.

my 7.5 10 bolt ran 11's for years on richmond gears and a auburn posi, little g bought em in perfect shape after many wheels up launches

I'll verify this....I was with Little G when he picked up the rear from the shop that installed camaroracers posi and gears, and the owner of the shop said they were in great shape.
I'd say it's mostly a matter of luck though....

Its a time bomb... people have broken them with stock power. So go figure.

my first rear... stock motor, T56, catback exhuast off road y pipe.... shattered the carrier, put a piece out through the cover, big mess.
got that fixed under warranty...
second rear... same motor/drivetrain setup... This time, the c clip apparently came out on pass side some how and another bolt became loose inside. all tore up. dealer said poor workmanship when last fixed, warranty wouldnt cover, dealer that did the work wouldnt either.. car got towed home
3rd rear, bought off ebay from cali, 350 shipped, came with all suspension and brakes, from a 2002 ws6 w/ 6000 miles only. i sold the extra parts for about 300 total and swapped the stripped rear in myself.
the last rear has lasted up to this point, while i had it, i upgraded all rear suspension and even tore the stock TQ arm in half. Rear is still going strong.
Now im pushing a full bolt-on cammed motor with a hi-pro clutch but i only run street tires, bad street tires none the less. i know im on borrowed time until i can get a 9" myself... and thats when i'll be getting slicks and a new steel driveshaft

The trick to keeping the 10-bolt alive is having no traction. The 10-bolt in my Monte has over 200K on it, still with the original GM 3.73s in it. Only mods to it are a Powertrax No-Slip unit and a T/A Performance cover with the bearing supports in it. I hope it lasts me another couple of years, since I really don't want to replace it. My car doesn't hook for squat though; Continental 245/45 17s don't stand a chance against my ZZ4 clone.

Like others said, if you hook hard it's going to break. Autos are much easier on the drive train then manuals as well.
BTW, what gears does it have? 2:72/3:23 seem to out last, 3:73/4:10 probably just because there is allot less material.

Stock rear...
changed the stock carrier to a Zexel Torsen differential for the 3:42s from the stock 2:73s. Upgraded the cover for better support. 98K miles...

i had richmond gears, oslid pinion spacer, auburn pro series posi, aluminum cover with the bearing cap torque down bolts, and also i welded the axle tubes all the way around. I had probably 100 passes on that below 12's.....

i have the stock rear, but i am NOT running much power over stock,
my buddy with a 2000 LS1 TA installed a 12 bolt, he gave me the stock rear, and i have it in my basement jsut hanging out, im pretty sure its NOT broken, but i could be wrong, hes on these message boards NP00TA is his user name.
if you would like to/or need to get a read (if u buy the car) i will GIVE you this one for FREE. let me know. its stock and may or may not be broken inside .. the housing is in tact 100%

u can have rear built from strange engineering that is streetable 4 about $2400. Personally have a spool unit from them with 456 gears and works with no glitches bolts right into place

rolled 128k today on the stock rear.... ive blown the trans and about 4 trans mounts in a year, but the rear is fine

is it an auto or stick. auto rears last alot longer then a stick will. mine went with bone stock power, from missing a 2-3 shift twice. fixed under warrenty, and now the new one is whining nicely. changing fluid will help extend it a little, so will a TA girdle.

I've got 178K on mine with about 15 passes and I also drive it like I stole it. I have another 10 bolt sitting in my garage for when this one goes. It has just recently started to wine after I put in all my suspension parts so I think more traction= 10 bolt death

Well heres the thing...Autos are much easier on the rear given that u dont have a stall. T56 is more harsh. At the same time as mentioned above if u dont have traction u shouldnt have to much of an issue. the other thing is i wouldnt be to worried about it because the worst thing that happens is it breaks and u buy a new one from sumone for 100$ cause thats what they go for out here. u can buy them all day long used for 100-200$ complete

QFT I personally have a guy who wants 125 for complete rear with brakes one for 150 for complete minus brakes another 150 minus brakes and another that doesnt want anything(good buddy of mine tho) once he gets his 12 bolt in.
LS1tech they go for 200-300 complete.

I was gentle on my 98 383 until I swapped in a 12 bolt...but walking it out seemed to do the trick. in contrast my 93 broke 5 stock rears with all sorts of ratios (and a couple of Auburns) from GM and Richmond before I swapped in a 9 inch, lol. Of course, I was only 23 back then and a lot more aggressive
