Looking at the pictures, those heads are damn thin in the area of the rocker bosses. Like 'holy crap that's nearly see-through' thin.

I had the same thing happen to me on Stage 1 PRC LS6 heads. Only had about 3k miles on it and no runs at the track.

Switched to AI 241s and never looked back.

Did it come apart at high RPM or just regular driving? What size push rods were you running and were they milled at all?

Cruising below 2k in 5th gear. I heard a small noise, the engine speed went nearly to redline and a lot of smoke bellowed out the back. Shop said the heads were over-ported and the deck was too thin to support the pressure. A chunk broke off and sent crap into the motor. My entire motor was toast.

7.4" pushrods, no milling. It came as a package from TSP with the cam, so you would assume they were correct. Unfortunately, I had bought the kit the year before I installed it but I hurt my shoulder and it sat on the shelf until I could install it the following year. TSP told me to take a hike when I told them since I had ordered it a year prior, even though the heads had about 3k miles on it.

Lesson learned.

Edit: FYI, this was back in 2008

Finally taking a step in the right direction. Trick Flow CNC 215s milled to 61cc for 11:1 comp. 921 dual comp springs and yella terra 1.7 rockers
Holley Valve covers and new GM gaskets.
Just need to find Ls2/Ls3 coils and harness to finish it up.

Another quality job from my cousin over at Quick Strip sand blasting & powder coating.
Also got my Ls2 coils for a cleaner look.

What head head gasket and thickness are you going to run? Guessing .051" if your coming up with 11:1 SCR?

Yea GM MLS compressed is .051 according to The Google Machine. Car should be going under the knife this week. Can't wait to get this thing back on the track.

Not to derail what you're doing, but you could easily push compression further with your combo with a thinner head gasket and also improve quench all for a nice gain. Your setup is almost identical to my old catfish

What gasket did you run and what was the comp ratio? Pump gas or Racegas? I'm going to Tune time on Weds to talk to Matt and get his opinion on the whole setup. I might even change the cam if he thinks there's a better cam for these heads. What cam did you run?

Old setup:
All stock LS1 shortblock
228/232 .612/.595 111+3 cam
TEA LS6 heads, 62cc chambers, PRC .650 Doubles, LS7 lifters, YT 1.7 rockers
.040" cometics
Fast 102/102, 4" CAI
ARH 1 7/8, cutout
Stock 4L60e/ HD2 shift kit
Vig 4000 stall
Full suspension, S60 3.73, 26" tire

Dyno'd 456/420 locked at RPM, and shift points were 6500rpm. I ran 92/93 pump on the street and test and tune nights, and didnt see a difference running race gas although it smelled amazing.

Static compression isnt as important to pre detonation as the dynamic compression driven by valve events. With .006" piston to deck height on my setp this calculates 11.3:1 SCR, 8.88:1 DCR, and .034" quench. Everyone has their own opinions but the general rule for DCR I found was:

91 pump = 8.5:1
92 pump = 8.5-8.6:1
93 pump = 8.7-8.8:1

Obviously I pushed the limits a bit with my setup on both DCR and quench but I was comfortable knowing that the combustion chambers of the heads and PTD were consistent or better than most of the combos out there trying to do the same. Full disclosure, this is a lot of theoretical number punching and I did take a gamble by just installing my cam dot to dot and took the cam card numbers for truth.

Do you have the full specs on your cam? intake duration @.006, LSA, and ICL? Any chance you measured piston to deck height? If you could provide those I'll list a quick rundown of SCR/DCR vs gasket thicknesses for your setup for you to decide.

Your Crane cam 1449601
228/232 @ .050
290/294 @ .006
112 LSA
107 ICL

Assume PTD = .006", TFS 61cc chambers, this is what I am coming up with -

.035" thk head gasket:
Quench = .029"
SCR = 11.63:1
DCR = 8.68:1

.040" thk head gasket:
Quench = .034"
SCR = 11.47:1
DCR = 8.57:1

.045" thk head gasket:
Quench = .039"
SCR = 11.32:1
DCR = 8.46:1

.051" thk head gasket:
Quench = .045"
SCR = 11.15:1
DCR = 8.34:1

I think .040" gaskets would be safe for your setup and you should have no problem running 92/93 pump. With that cam you run into piston to head clearance issues before you reach a compression limit for pump gas.

I am curious to hear what TTP recommends you do

Thanks for all the info man, Still up in the air about what gasket I'm gonna use. I have the .051 in hand but that because I jumped the gun and bought those right after i got the heads. Gonna get TTP opinion and go from there.
