remove #1 sparkplug, put finger over hole, turn engine till you feel air pushing out. thats one way to find tdc compression stroke. you kinda need the balancer and tab on to get it to o degree tdc then though.
otherwise use a piston stop tool screwed into sparkplug hole. find compression stroke like before, then screw in tool and rotate more, screw out tool a little, rotate, screw rotate etc till piston starts dropping, back up and fine tune to find tdc.

Just buy a piston stop.

I have used the Comp and Milodon ones. Buy the Milodon.

Find where in the cycle #1 intake/exhaust move one after another and go back a hair so they are both in between that cycle (this is TDC on the #6 cylinder)... then rotate the crank 1 full rotation.

Or break apart an old plug, tap it and install a threaded rod (be sure to knock the threads off the end of the rod so you don't damage your pistons). Free piston stop that you don't have to wait for it to arrive.

Piston stop is the way to go. Heads are on, I assume?
