a quick breakdown of valve shrouding:

the cylinder is not wide enough to allow the effective use of large valve heads. The valve will be very close to the cylinder wall and cause an obstruction in airflow, hurting performance.

If you cant get a lot of air and fuel in, you wont get a lot of power out of it.

usually the mininum the block is bored to clean it up in .030 over..

302, 327, 350, 383 are 4in bore motors

377,400 and up are 4.125 bore

a 307 is 3.85ish and a 305 is 3.75...

the 4in or larger bore motors have wider cylinders allowing one to use larger valves and thus move more air and fuel therefore allowing more horsepower..

remember bore is the distance across the piston and stroke is the distance the piston moves up and down.

the 305 isnt a bad platform and all kinds of people run all kinds of times with them but dollar for dollar if your going to build a motor from scratch you money would be better spent on a larger cubic inch motor..

now lets hear the 305-350 debate..

Normal 350 head's cyl chambers are too big, and the small bore of the 305 will shroud unless you clearance the block. L98 heads, not B2L heads, will fit, but do not have access for EGR.

Wow...I did not see these whole page 3...and I posted that reading page 2.
Anyway, L98 Aluminum heads will fit, there isnt much shrouding. The larger intake valve comes close to the wall, but the World 305 heads have the same size intake valve, 1.94.
L98 heads are $$$ and you lose your EGR.
World 305 heads are $$$, but are the only aftermarket head that works
I found a set of worked 305 heads that were done by a profesional shop, put on new .550 lift valve springs, Manely SS 1.94/1.50 valves, and rebuilt and cleaned the whole head, a set for 350 shiped.

Were those stock heads, or aftermarket?

and when you overbore a cylinder, you actualy increase the displacement:
a 350 becomes a 355, 400 becomes 406 cu in displacement, and etc. this is something that has to be taken into account when trying to nail down your compression ratio. your 9.0:1CR can easily become 8.3:1 with a .030 overbore... not a good thing if you are trying to make big power. just something else to keep in mind.

hell, for that matter, the thickness of your head gasket can affect your CR.

Well, they were LB9 castings that had a little work to take the larger springs, 3 angle valve job and larger valve seat for the intake (1.94 over the 1.84 stocker) as well as they were rebuilt with new teflon valve seals and brass valve guides. I gasket matched them with a little grinding work, and thats about it. I tried to get them as close to the World 305 heads. I was gunna eventualy really work on the intake port and see what kinda power I could have pulled..but oh well. Last I heard, the 305 is out and in went in a 383....

i wouldn't worry about tools. one thing i never do is go work on someone's car without my tools. call me crazy, but i feel funny using someone else's tools.

others will likely bring their tools, too. you won't need anything special for this, in the way of tools. just basic hand tools will get the job done.
