idiling problem

i have an 86 iroc z28 305 tpi that is a really rough idle when first started once it warms up it smooths out somewhat but putting a load on the motor will put it right on its face ive been told battery what do you guys think also when i put a load on the motor it will back fire quite frequently and im just going crazy any idea where i might start guys

wow, one giant run on sentence! lol it could be alot of things. check engine light on? fuel filter/injectors could be clogged, timing could be out, to name a few

double check the gap. ensure the wires are routed correctly, replace them if you feel you should. with it idling, try pulling one wire off at a time with insulated pliers, see if removing one doesn't affect the running of the motor.

deffinately check the injectors and the timing, possibly a leaky valve or possibly the feul pump, i had a similar problem on my 87, all i had to do was mess with the carb and distributor a lil bit
