View Full Version : Screaching noises

Ok, help me figure this out. I drove to work this morning, and nothing out of the ordinary occurred, but I was driving with my windows up. I go to drive home, windows down, and I hear a loud screaching noise. I think nothing of it as I'm around other cars along a Jersey barrier, so I assume it can't be me. WRONG. This loud screaching noise only occurs when I make a soft right hand turn. If I make a hard right, it doesn't screaching, and any kind of left doesn't screach. Just if I'm following the road and is kinda goes tot he right. It's a metal on metal type sound, I think (I'm bad at describing sounds, but I'm pretty sure it's a metal on metal type sound).

I'm thinkin the CV joint maybe, but why wouldn't it make any sound when I make a hard right turn?

Any other ideas?

CV joint possibly.

Maybe the rubber boot is ripped... and crap got in there?

Yeah, it's now making the noise more often, particularly if I"m driving straight, but the wheel is slightly turned right. If I can get the steering wheel to be slightly to the left, it won't make the noise until I go right again.

Guess I"m takin it into the shop, let them tell me exactly what's wrong, and go from there. Anyone wanna fix it for me? Free beer and pizza if you'd like :)

if you take it to a shop, ask for a diagnosis and an estimate. then any house-calls we'd be likely to make would result in a checkmark in the win column. can always pick up the parts on eBay or something.

what car are we talking about, anyway?

I find that turning up the music and singing loudly fixes things like that...speaking of which, the breaks on the stang are starting to squeak...i should get those fixed or something...

My POS Hyundai Elantra :) (or should it be :( )

Yeah I'm gonna try to take it over tomorrow morning and see if they'll tell me what's wrong and a price, and see what I bribes I can do with my friends :)

let me know if you need an extra pair of hands. i'm ultimately more successful working on other's cars than my own. did some work on my niece's car today, and of course it came out perfect. while i have two cars sitting in my driveway...

A CV shaft would make a clicking noise, and would get louder and louder.
A grinding noise could be a brake problem, or a wheel bearing problem.

Well, I do have problems with my brakes, I think. But they have never made a grinding noise, only a rubbing noise on the left side occasionally (it usually happens when going 70 - 0 really quickly, will last a couple minutes, and be gone for a couple days...never understood that one either). But, can it be the brakes making the grinding noise if it's not happening when I brake, only when I turn the steering wheel?

I really should take it over to the shop nearby and see what they say...but I"m too lazy, and I gotta go to work later...

I'd say brakes. The sensors on the pads are probably just starting to touch the rotor when you turn and such. Usually an early warning sign. Pull the wheels off and check them out. Should be an easy fix.

This sounds feasible, as when Tim looked at my pads a while ago (last summer I think), there was still a lot of pad left, so I'm guessing they could be getting down to the sensors.

However, I don't work on my car...I change my oil and rotate my tires only. I'll see if I can get someone to look at it.

If you can rotate your tires you can check your brakes. And if you want to learn how to change them I can show you too. No sense in spending a fortune on it if you can do it yoruself.

Yeah, I should clarify that. It's not that I don't want to, it's I don't know how. Was just gonna bring it over and find out exactly what the problem is, so then I can go buy the parts and bribe someone to do it for cheap ;)

North Hanover is about a 45 min ride for you. Its up near where I work in Florham Park.

If you're going to take the brakes off, check the wheel bearings to see if they need to be repacked.

Left front wheel bearing or CV. The reason the sound isn't noticable when you make a hard right is because you're getting REALLY bad metal to metal... shavings if you would. When metals aren't "loaded" with much force they vibrate at a very high frequency and the result is the scrapping sound. Unload the bearings and you don't get metal to metal contact (making a left unloads the front right). I'm leaning more towards the bearings but it might be the CV. CV's usually occure when you're loading them with torque and have a suspension travel during this acceleration (or engine braking).
I've had the left rear wheel bearing go on me. Are you SURE it's the front and not the rear?
Free beer and pizza... I'm in. Let me know when.

If you really want to, you could drive 30 mins east and bring it to my shop. Ill put it up in the air and have someone take a look at it. If you need too, just IM me and leave me a message.

Damn this state and its stupid naming conventions. Kinda like having two Washington, NJ's - one up near Hackettstown and the other down near, well, nothing really. Its in Southern NJ.

squeaking? BAH! rubbish. no body needs new brakes til your pedal is hitting the floor or if your screamer is hitting the rotor. as long as they are working, it's all gravy. hahaha.

it could be a CV joint, they can make squealing noises if they are worn down.

a list of other possible things may be a dragging brake or wheel bearings. I'm not sure about the dragging brake, unless it's been dragging for a while and has worn the pads down to the metal.

If I had to put money on it, it's either the CV joint or a wheel bearing.

BigAls87Z28

If it was a CV shaft, she would have heard the clicking noise prior, and htat happend whenever not only when you turn, but when you drive as well. Its something that would deffinatly stand out. Like I said, bring it to my shop and we will tak a look at it.

ShitOnWheels

I forgot to mention this last night when I came home from work. The screaching noises will not occur if I am riding my brakes. If I have to slow down while turning, it will be quiet, even if it started out noisy before I hit the brakes.

Fasterthanyou, it actually sounds like it is coming from the right side (the sounds from the left wheel were the occasional rubbing when braking hard). I'm hopin this weekend someone will take a look at it, or I will bring it to Al if I have to. We shall see. :)

Fasterthanyou
06-07-2005, 05:58 PM
Definatly sounds like a wheel bearing if the brakes make it go quiet. Also, unloading/loading... there are 2 bearings on each wheel. They rarely BOTH go bad and so it can be an outer or inner. Replace both on whatever wheel is bad and you'll be good to go.

Al, what's a good time on Sat to bring it? And which store do I gotta go to? (I'd be coming from 70 past the 70/37 circle). I gotta babysit at 6, so I'm thinkin like 2 or 3? That cool? or would Sunday around that time be better?

First off, Kelly sorry to hear about the foot, hope everything went well.

2nd, thats the wrong Ocean Sears!! Thats Ocean County, you want Ocean Twp!! I gave you directions in that IM this morning. If you go to Ocean County, you will walk out with 4 tires, new brakes, shocks and struts and you wont know what hit you til you get home.
