View Full Version : Simple Turbo Idea

I was reading mufflex's website (a local custom exhaust place, huge reputation) and read they can do custom turbo applications for everything from custom headers, y-pipes, down-pipes, intake pipes, and intercooler fabrication. I got this random idea, of one really simple and relativly cheap set-up.
Running on the stock manifolds, have Mufflex fabriacate a reverse y-pipe towards the front of the car, to come up into a single turbo set up (behind the radiator, between the motor). From their the turbo would be wherever it fits (most likely right side of the engine bay where the intake & traction controll box would be relocated) and run it into a side mounted intercooler (probably the lower right side of the front of the car, where a regular intake would sit [ATI makes twin intercoolers that sit their]) then turbo back I would run out a 3" down-pipe to my existing 3" magnaflow without a catalytic converter. Pipes would then need to be made to an intercooler and back to the intake. This would obviously also require some fuel support like a 255lb/hr pump and larger injectors (tuned).
All I would need is the turbo, wastegate (if not intergrated), BOV, boost guage, fuel pump, injectors & a tune. Plus whatever it costs to have the pipes fabricated.
It would be a low boost application just to have some cool factor and that extra get up and go. I think thats about it? Does anyone have any input?
I think that it? Does anyone have any suggestions, Ideas, Thoughts?

Mufflex is a pretty good shop, yea, but be prepared to pay a lot of money
the engine corssmember does create a little obstacle with your idea. Other than that its possible, but still cheaper in the end to buy a full kit i would think.

Buy the time you purchased everything separately and paid for the custom work you would be way over the price of just buying a kit.
BTW: Mufflex is great! Denny does all the exhaust work on my cars. His latest was the custom 3" Y-Pipe, I have the 4" cat back, and he built custom piping for my supercharger -> intercooler -> intake. and you will pay for his skill and top quality work! ( as it should be!!).

there are a couple of budget kits out there for 3 or 4k. mufflex just charged my buddy 800 for a custom catback for a VW. if a catback for a VW is 800 i can only imagine how much hot parts for a turbo setup are. a turbo head unit is about 1k also.

remote mount the bitch...you could use your existing exhaust just !cat and have them run the tubing connecting the turbo to the existing exhaust which should be cheap & easy and have them run the intake tubing back up front...the fabrication work would probably still run you about a grand but total outlay of the kit if you do it yourself should be less then 3 grand. Thats with everything turbo, oil lines, fuel injectors, tuning, etc.

you can find head units without a bov built in for less then $800 new in alot of cases...depends what your looking for.

how about a remote oiling system?
and alex, you are slightly ahead of the game with the upgraded fuel pump

for standard or remote mount you can tap into any available pressure side oil source. the remote mount will require a a supplimental pump to run the oil back to the engine.
there are sources for oil next to the oil filter, rear of the block, and there are places you cna even drill and tap if you want.
LT1's have lots of oil available. :)
a lot of guys use S-10 V8 conversion shorty headers and flip them upside down and swap side to side.

but what about an extra oil tank for the turbo? that would be the one thing holding me back from rear mount as opposed to an engine bay turbo

I had thought about that route before but on a standard 350 SBC, I would think the exhaust is different when it comes to an LT1, Unless they make conversion LT1 headers for S-10 applications then Im in buisness.
I have found a few hot parts in the $1k+ range for LT1's but the amount of actual kits is very very low. And theirs not many people running them to give me the confidence in purchasing one. Most of the turbo LT1 set ups I have seen on the net are custom big buck jobs :-(
No rear mounts, my car looks good as it is on the outside, it needs more attention in the engine bay and go fast department.

an extra oil tank? They get fed with engine oil...the same stuff that lubricates your engine...you run an oil line to the turbo and then a line back to the engine usually using a pump. I think the sts setup just dumps the oil through the oil filler cap.

a front mount setup is going to be a big buck job no matter how you look at it with many bends that all need to be test fit, tacked, removed then welded. Guaranteed at least 2-4 grand in labor & parts from mufflex...doing a rear mount for mufflex is about as difficult as two custom catback setups which aint hard.

i dont like the idea of running an oil line the length of the car. i would much rather have the extra oil tank and pump
yes they make lt1 conversion headers fwiw
what is the difference? I thought the exhaust ports and bolt holes were the same.

they very well might be...i just know there are a few companies that make lt1 conversion ones.

Or the fact that they got paint all over the bottom side of the car...

yeah my friend was not happy with mufflex's work at the absolute least. but he is picky as hell. which he has every right to be for that much money

before you rule out remote mounts, heres what i can say..........having the oil lines and intake tube running under the length of the car definetley help. you'd be amazed how much cooler everything runs which amounts to alot less wear and tear on the engine than a normal front mount adds. you only lose an un-noticable amount of boost and the lag is comparable to most front mounts. the STS kit is a bolt-on and comes off just as easy if you ever sell the car or want to use it on another F-bod with the same engine. there's one guy with a profile on STS's site that is making 522hp at the wheels through the stock exhaust with stock heads. they are incredible units and run roughly about $4000 for a 5psi kit. i'd highly recommend it for the ease of install and the noticable power difference.

Totally understandable! I have looked into an STS kit, we have a member on the Boards 2000OrangeSS running a well supported STS kit.

what do you mean by that? you can run a turbo without oil?

so your saying that the longer oil lines are beneficial? am i the only person worried about one of those lines getting damaged and causing severe damage?

as long as they are routed right, there won't be any problems. it's a steel braided line. and the long oil lines are beneficial in that they cool the oil coming back from the turbo.

makes alot of sense when you put it that way. there is a guy selling a full kit on ls1tech for 2800 dollars. i also read on ls1tech that because of the increase turbo lag and because there is no increase in heat in the engine bay that it is much more easier on the engine. which is important for people like me who probably would run the turbo with a stock bottom end

I believe there are some turbos(not many) that are self contained & dont need an oil feed line. Not sure how dependable they are but they are out there.

if it is a complete kit, that's a hell of a deal! and there is less turbo lag than you'd expect something running all the way from the back of the car to have. they are designed to run with the stock bottom end and can be upgraded later on. if you have the cash for it, i say jump on it if you want an easy bolt on mod that will definetley increase power.

i would but since i dont got the cash, its gonna wait. a couple other kits going for similar prices too. i would love one with a front mount intercooler and an electronic boost controller.

:soapbox:
I hate mufflex. When I needed a muffler (that i bought) and new catback, (without asking me) they threw on a 3'' I pipe. Keep in mind that the car was a 3.1L. Ummmm flow issues? And I was charged $250.

Did you tell them specifically that you wanted a certain size pipe? If you did, then I would take it back and have them put the correct size on it. If not, then it's your own fault. 3", 3.5", and 4" is all they stock for F-bodies, because that's what they use on their cat-back systems.
